Chill mummy 💛 Light fragrance isn’t as scary as we think.

For healthy babies with normal skin, lightly scented baby shampoo & lotion can still be gentle for daily use 👶🏻🛁

Sometimes fragrance is added just to cover the raw “ingredient smell”, so baby smells fresh and clean after bath ✨

What I personally worry more about is harsh cleansers like SLS — because they may strip baby’s natural oils and cause dryness or irritation.

Don’t let random online info stress you out lah 😭

... Read moreWhen it comes to choosing baby care products, especially shampoos and lotions, many parents worry about the presence of fragrance. From my personal experience and research, I’ve learned that light fragrance in baby products isn’t necessarily harmful. In fact, many manufacturers add fragrance simply to mask the natural chemical odors of raw ingredients, making the product smell fresh and pleasant after bath time. This can actually create a more enjoyable bathing experience for both the baby and the parent. However, the key is moderation and the skin’s sensitivity. For babies with normal, healthy skin, lightly scented shampoos and lotions are generally gentle enough for daily use. The fragrance used is often subtle and formulated to minimize the risk of irritation. That said, babies with more sensitive or allergy-prone skin might require fragrance-free products to avoid possible reactions. What concerns me more than fragrance are harsh cleansing agents, especially Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and its similar compound Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). SLS is a surfactant found in many cleansing and foaming products—it helps these products lather. But this same property can sometimes strip away natural oils from the baby’s delicate skin, leading to dryness, irritation, or discomfort. This is why many parents and experts recommend choosing baby shampoos that are free of SLS or labeled as mild, sulfate-free formulations. I also want to address the common confusion around SLS. Despite some online myths linking it to serious health concerns, scientific research shows that products containing less than 1% concentration of SLS are generally safe for daily use. The irritation potential varies depending on the individual and the concentration used. From my own routine, I always prefer baby shampoos and washes that highlight gentle formulas and avoid harsh detergents. When trying new products, I recommend patch testing them on a small skin area first to check for any adverse reactions. If the baby’s skin remains smooth and irritation-free, the product is likely suitable for ongoing use. Ultimately, parents should avoid getting overwhelmed by conflicting online advice. Focus on trustworthy sources and observe how your baby’s skin responds. If there’s any doubt, consulting a pediatric dermatologist can provide peace of mind. Remember, good baby care is about balance—choosing products that clean effectively without stripping skin moisture or causing irritation. In summary, lightly scented baby shampoos and lotions can be a safe and pleasant choice for healthy babies, while watching out for harsh surfactants like SLS is essential for maintaining your baby’s skin health. Don’t let misinformation stress you out—enjoy your precious moments with your baby and keep their skincare routine simple and gentle.
