how I build my sketches
Kind of like journaling but with pictures. I used pictures I took this month to make this drawing. I let myself go with the first idea that I get and let that be good enough. Draw as you swipe through your photos with no plan.
Building sketches inspired by photos can be a refreshing approach to creativity. In my experience, starting with no fixed plan and simply letting your hand translate what you see in your pictures opens up artistic freedom. Scrolling through your camera roll, pick out images that catch your attention—these don’t need to be related or make perfect sense together. For instance, combining memories like trips to the fabric store or moments with family can create a collage-like vibe in your art. What’s liberating about this approach is the acceptance of imperfection and randomness. One day, you might integrate doodles inspired by something quirky, like a vintage Daihatsu Hijet or an unusual animal sighting such as a Monk seal. Trust the process; even when unsure how to capture a particular figure or object, simply adding it with confidence can result in an unexpectedly cool final piece. It’s like journaling with images and sketches combined. This method also encourages experimenting with different textures and backgrounds, like adding fabric patterns or design elements that evoke places you’ve been. Don’t hesitate to throw random elements together to give your sketches life and personality. Over time, this practice not only improves your drawing skills but also becomes a visual diary filled with personal stories and artistic exploration.
