The after-effect of stress

If you're a high-achieving woman who crashes AFTER stress ends, here's what's actually happening in your body 👇

You made it through the chaos. The deadline passed. The hard thing is over. So why do you feel WORSE now?

When stress hits, your nervous system floods your body with energy to fight, flee, or freeze. But modern stress doesn't let you DO any of those things. You can't fight your boss. You can't flee the draining conversation. You can't freeze during the meeting.

So you override it. You smile. You stay calm. You perform.

And all that stress—the cortisol, the adrenaline, the activation—stays STUCK in your body.

This is why you crash when things calm down. Your body held it together when it had to. Now it's trying to release what it couldn't release then.

This isn't weakness. This is what researchers call the incomplete stress cycle.

You can't just relax your way out of incomplete biology. You need to actually complete the cycle.

Tomorrow I'm breaking down the 7 research-backed ways to do it. (Rest isn't one of them.)

Drop a 💚 if this made something click for you.

... Read moreHaving experienced periods of intense stress myself, I can relate deeply to the feeling of crashing once the pressure finally lifts. It's frustrating to think that after surviving the chaos, your body seems to betray you with exhaustion, mood swings, or even physical symptoms. What helped me understand this better was realizing that my nervous system was stuck in what experts call an incomplete stress cycle. During stressful moments, the body releases cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones to prepare us for immediate action—fight, flight, or freeze—but modern challenges rarely allow these responses to unfold. Instead, we suppress these instincts to maintain composure, especially in professional or social settings. I found that just relaxing or sleeping wasn’t enough; my body needed ways to safely discharge the pent-up energy. Incorporating methods like deliberate physical movement (even simple exercises or shaking off tension), deep breathing techniques, and grounding activities helped me complete that cycle. For example, after a stressful day, I started taking brisk walks or doing yoga stretches to signal to my body that the threat was over and it could release the tension. Mindfulness practices helped me stay present and observe the lingering activation instead of pushing it aside. Sharing these experiences with other high-functioning women showed me I wasn’t alone in this struggle. Many of us have internalized that our strength is tied to constant productivity, but true resilience also involves honoring our body's need to finish the stress response. This approach aligns with research emphasizing that rest alone doesn’t resolve the biochemical activation caused by stress. If you identify with feeling worse after stress ends, consider exploring activities that encourage completing your body's natural cycle, beyond just resting. Completing this cycle is essential to prevent burnout and restore your nervous system's balance, empowering you to thrive sustainably.

This diagram illustrates the neurobiology of stress, mapping brain regions like the pre-frontal cortex, neocortex, limbic system (amygdala, hypothalamus), and autonomic nervous system. It shows how sensory input triggers an 'alarm system,' leading to 'accelerator' (fight/flight) or 'brakes' (rest/digest) responses, detailing their functions and physiological effects.

A title slide for an article on "the psychology behind BRAINDUMPING" and "how to create mental space when you're overwhelmed." It features a pink daily planner and a sticky note with a to-do list, including items like 'collect data' and 'check website'.
This image explains "The Zeigarnik Effect," stating that the brain remembers unfinished tasks almost twice as well as finished ones. It clarifies that unfinished tasks include chores, worries, ideas, conversations, or anything 'open' in your mind.
This slide defines the "Brain Dump" technique as getting everything out of your head and onto paper or a digital document. It explains that writing things down offloads them from working memory, freeing up mental energy and quieting the brain.
How Brain Dumping Can Help You Manage Stress
