Bad SAHM Habits I need to break

Ever since staying home with our sweet girl I’ve developed some habits that are not necessarily bad in moderation but don’t help my mental health!

01. Not getting ready and staying in sweats/pajamas all day. This one really makes it hard to feel motivated to do things! Especially if it was a rough night and I miss a shower (moms iykyk🥴). Something I’m going to start working on is getting at least one of the following done daily:

- get dressed

-do my hair & make-up

Hopefully doing one will help my mental health a little bit more!

02. Okay okay, I live in the Midwest it’s not always possible to get outside with a baby in this weather switching constantly, BUT it’s starting to get better and I’m hoping to be outside for at LEAST two hours a day!! I also think my girl needs this. On days it’s yucky or just not happening I need to at least open the blinds & curtains!

03. My screen time, while not horrible, is still more than I’d like. I used to read every feeding time/nap time but now I find myself aimlessly scrolling and that’s not a habit I like. I want to set a realistic time goal, but unsure of what that is for me.

Any tips/ideas???? I’d greatly appreciate them!!

... Read moreIt's so refreshing to hear another mama bravely share her struggles with common SAHM habits! When I first became a stay-at-home mom, I truly believed I'd have all the time in the world to be productive and perfectly put-together. Oh, how quickly reality set in! I completely resonate with the feeling of staying in sweats all day and how it can just drain your motivation. For me, breaking the 'pajama trap' wasn't about dressing up in fancy clothes, but about finding a middle ground. I started by challenging myself to simply change out of my sleepwear into presentable loungewear or comfy casual clothes right after breakfast. Even if it was just leggings and a nice top, it felt like a small win. It signals to my brain that the day has officially started, and it genuinely boosts my mood. I’ve found that laying out my outfit the night before reduces decision fatigue in the morning fog. It's not about impressing anyone, but about honoring myself and feeling ready for whatever the day brings, whether it's a trip to the park or just tackling the endless laundry pile. Another big one for me was not getting outside everyday. Especially during those long winter months or when the weather was unpredictable, it felt like a monumental task to bundle up both myself and the baby. But honestly, even just ten minutes of fresh air can be a game-changer. I started small: just opening the blinds to let natural light flood the house made a difference. Then, I’d aim for a quick walk around the block, rain or shine (within reason, of course!). Getting a good baby carrier or investing in decent waterproof gear helped immensely. It's amazing how a change of scenery, even just seeing trees and sky, can recalibrate your perspective and give both you and your little one a much-needed mental break. Plus, it often helps with nap schedules! And then there's the phone, the ultimate SAHM companion and distraction. Putting my phone down more has been an ongoing battle. It’s so easy to get caught in the endless scroll during feedings or nap times, promising yourself it’s just for 'a minute.' But those minutes turn into hours, and suddenly you feel less present and more exhausted. What's helped me is designating 'phone-free zones' or 'phone-free times.' For example, during all meal times (for the baby and me!) and for the first hour after waking up. Instead of scrolling, I try to read a physical book, listen to a podcast with one earbud in, or simply observe my baby playing. It's tough, and I don't always succeed, but recognizing the aimless scrolling and actively choosing to do something else, even for a few minutes, makes a huge difference in how I feel at the end of the day. These habits are so common for moms because our lives change so drastically. It's not about being perfect, but about finding small, consistent ways to nurture our mental health amidst the beautiful chaos of motherhood. What tiny habit shift are you celebrating today?

You’re not alone!! The first two are where I really struggle. I will dress my daughter to the nines, I love it so much, but I’ll step out looking like Adam Sandler. On a good day 😂
