Wow, I'm still buzzing with excitement after bringing home my new giant Vietnamese centipede! Seeing them explore their carefully prepared habitat for the first time was such a joy. Many of you have been curious about what goes into setting up a proper home for these magnificent creatures, so I wanted to share a deeper dive into my centipede enclosure setup and some essential care tips I've learned along the way. When I was planning for my new dark brown Vietnamese centipede, I knew the enclosure had to be just right. For a full-grown Vietnamese centipede, you’ll want at least a 10-gallon tank, but a 20-gallon long is even better to give them ample space to roam and express natural behaviors. I used a glass terrarium with a secure, screen top to ensure proper ventilation while preventing escapes – these guys are surprisingly good climbers! For substrate, I went with a deep layer of coconut fiber mixed with some organic topsoil – this dark substrate is fantastic for holding humidity, which is crucial for these tropical invertebrates. I made sure it was at least 4-6 inches deep so they have plenty of room to burrow and create their own hiding spots. Hides are non-negotiable! I used several pieces of cork bark, creating natural tunnels and dark spots where my centipede can feel secure. You can also add some sphagnum moss to help maintain humidity and even a small green leaf for a touch of natural beauty, though they won't eat it. Maintaining proper temperature (around 75-85°F or 24-29°C) and humidity (70-80%) is key, so a reliable thermometer/hygrometer is one of those vital pet supplies. A heat mat on the side of the tank (never directly underneath) connected to a thermostat can help maintain the temperature gradient. Now, about vietnamese centipede care – it’s not as complex as some might think, but consistency is important. Feeding is fascinating! These giant centipedes are carnivorous, and mine loves crickets, roaches, and even small worms. I usually offer food every few days, making sure to remove any uneaten prey to prevent mold and mites. A shallow water dish is a must, but ensure it's not too deep to prevent drowning and always keep it topped up with fresh, dechlorinated water. Misting the enclosure regularly helps keep the humidity up, especially around shedding time. Remember, while they are captivating, these aren't pets for handling. They can deliver a painful bite, which, while not usually life-threatening, can be quite unpleasant, so always use long tongs when maintaining the enclosure or moving decor. Safety first! My centipede has that classic look: a beautiful dark brown body with striking orange head and tail segments and distinctive yellowish legs – truly a sight to behold! A full grown Vietnamese centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes dehaani) can reach impressive lengths, often 8-10 inches, making them quite imposing and attractive. Sometimes people confuse them with other large species, like the Taiwan centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans), but the distinct coloration and size usually help identify the Vietnamese variety. Known as 'Kan Khajura' in some regions, these insects are truly unique and make for incredibly engaging display pets. I've always been drawn to unique invertebrates, and the challenge and reward of caring for such an ancient and powerful creature are immense.
