Baby’s First Snow Day!
This is a tiny bit of a lie, because I believe it snowed the day we got home from the hospital. I will also argue that little miss didn’t get to see too much of the snow at all of 5 days old. This morning and some of the early afternoon we had steady snow.
I personally love snow. I love watching it fall, and seeing it in the morning when you wake up! My daughter and I spend a lot of time looking at the window (possibly hitting the window some too, it’s fun!). We watched tons of snow flakes fall. We also watched the movie Frozen to really feel those snowy feels. It was her first time seeing the movie, it was fun to sing all of the songs to her.
Do you have a favorite way to spend your snow days?
After sharing our sweet first snow day moments, I've been thinking about all the fun ways we can make these wintry days even more special, especially with little ones! While my tiny miss was mostly observing from inside, it got me wondering about practical and creative activities for babies and toddlers on their first snow day of the season. It’s not just about building snowmen (though that's coming soon!), but about soaking in the unique wonder of winter. One of my favorite low-key ideas for a first snow day is bringing a little bit of that snowy environment indoors for sensory play. Grab a clean tray and scoop a thin layer of fresh snow onto it. Let your baby safely touch it, feel the cold, and watch it melt. You can add some colorful plastic cups or scoops for them to play with – maybe even some colorful gloves if they're old enough to wear them and keep their hands a bit warmer while exploring the texture. It’s a wonderful way to introduce them to the season without facing the full chill. For a touch of "art" that's perfect for tiny hands, consider edible finger paints! Mix a few drops of food coloring into plain yogurt or baby food purees. Let your little one spread it on their high chair tray or a piece of paper. The white yogurt can even mimic snow on a dark background! It’s a mess-friendly way to engage their creativity and make their own "artwork" inspired by the day. We also love drawing simple shapes or faces on a fogged-up windowpane, watching the "snowflakes" disappear as the window clears. Even if you're not planning a long outdoor adventure, the first snow day of the season is perfect for quick photo ops! Bundle up your little one in their warmest gear – a cozy grey winter jacket, a cute grey beanie, and those bright colorful gloves. Step outside for just a minute or two to capture that magical first glimpse, or simply pose by a window with the snow falling in the background. My little one loves looking out with her glasses on, pointing at the fluffy white stuff. These moments create precious memories that you'll cherish forever. Beyond playtime, think about establishing cozy snow day traditions. Gather around with a warm drink (hot cocoa for older kids, warm milk for babies) and read a snow-themed board book. "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats is a classic! You could even try a simple DIY snow globe activity with an old jar, water, glitter, and a small waterproof toy. It’s a calm, engaging activity that adds to the festive feel. Ultimately, the goal is to enjoy the unique beauty of the first snow day and make it special for your family. What are some of your favorite, low-effort activities or traditions for making the most of a snowy day with your little ones? I'd love to hear your ideas!

I love sledding with my kids and then having a nice hot chocolate. I'm so jealous we never get snow anymore it's always just cold rain! I prefer pretty Snow ❄️
