Christmas Shopping Tips at Marshalls & TJMaxx
Working at Marshalls was one of my favorite jobs I had in college. I was on the mark down team for 6 months over the holiday season so here are my tips and tricks for getting the best holiday deal.
Mark Downs:
Mark downs were done on the first of the month. Most of the time they were done before customers came into the store/the morning hours. So if you are looking for a good deal on a gift. December 1st would be the best time to hit the stores.
Christmas Mark Downs:
Christmas Mark Downs go through two sets of mark downs. The first will be to help sell the left over Christmas merchandise. If you see something you like but the price is still a little steep. You can risk it for the second mark down that happens in January. This is when you usually see Marshalls/TJMaxx advertising their clearance sale. Now if you see items during this time you are going to want to buy them. Come late January early February all of those items get removed from the store and “sent back” to the warehouses (at least that’s what we’re told).

Okay, so you've got the markdown dates down, but let's talk about leveling up your Marshalls and TJ Maxx Christmas clearance game even further! As someone who spent holidays surrounded by these treasures, I picked up a few extra tricks that really make a difference when you're on the hunt for those coveted Christmas clearance items. What to Hunt For During Clearance Sales When those clearance sales hit, especially in January, you'll find some incredible steals. Don't just think about what you need *now*. This is the perfect time to stock up for next year's holidays! Think gorgeous Christmas ornaments, festive serving platters, high-quality wrapping paper, and even branded gift sets that make for easy birthday presents throughout the year. I always looked for those cozy winter throws or scented candles – they’re not strictly 'Christmas' but they get deeply discounted after the season. Holiday-themed kitchen towels, decorative pillows, and even small electronics that were part of gift bundles can also be found at amazing prices. It's all about having a keen eye and thinking ahead! Decoding the Tags and Spotting Value Ever wonder about those colored tags? While Marshalls and TJ Maxx love to keep us guessing, generally, the red tags signify the deepest discounts. Always keep an eye out for these. And here's a little secret: sometimes items get put on clearance just because they're a single item left from a set, or their packaging is slightly dinged. If the product itself is perfect, you've hit the jackpot! Don't be afraid to inspect items carefully. A minor imperfection on the box rarely means the item inside isn't still a fantastic deal. Remember those 'HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE HOLIDAYS WITH Marshalls & TJMAXX' signs you often see? They really encourage you to maximize your shopping strategy, and part of that is understanding how to get the most value for your money. Timing is Everything (Again!) You know about the first of the month for markdowns, but for Christmas clearance specifically, the weeks immediately following Christmas Day are golden. Stores are eager to clear out seasonal stock, so that first week of January is prime time. I'd often see people come in early on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning – fewer crowds, more time to browse, and usually fresh markdowns from the night before. This is when you can really clean up on those post-holiday deals. The earlier you go after a major holiday, the better your chances are of finding the best selection before everyone else snags the good stuff. Beyond the Christmas Aisle: Hidden Gems Don't limit yourself to just the obvious Christmas sections. Wander through the home goods, kitchenware, and even the beauty departments. You might find items that were originally intended as gifts but are now marked down. Those 'HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE HOLIDAYS WITH Marshalls & TJMAXX' messages are a great reminder to explore every corner! I once found a beautiful, high-end serving dish in January that was probably part of a Christmas collection but was just sitting on a regular shelf, deeply discounted. Also, keep an eye out for items that aren't necessarily 'Christmas' but are seasonal, like winter coats, boots, or cold-weather accessories that will also see price drops as spring approaches. A Word on Returns and Persistence Sometimes people return items after Christmas, and these can end up right back on the clearance rack, giving you a second chance at something you might have missed. It's all about checking back frequently. Remember, shopping clearance is a bit like a treasure hunt – you've got to be persistent and enjoy the thrill of the find! As the saying goes, early birds get the worm, and in this case, the best deals. These holiday shopping tips are truly my go-to for savvy spending, and I hope they help you score some amazing finds!
