Running Free To Be Me
Free To Be Me was an organization that was started by the LGBT students on our college campus. It was created because at the time the students did not feel like their voices were being heard in the original LGBT group on campus. Thankfully when I joined we were at a point where we were collaborating, but still separate groups to help fill students needs.
One of the events I ran and organized was Wings Your Way. The idea of the event was to come as you as to enjoy some boneless or boneless wings dressed just how you like them. I worked very hard to organize this event. From pitching the idea to our group advisor, to getting the event space, and working with campus dinning to cater the event. A lot of these things were very out of my comfort zone. I handed out pamphlets, hung posters to help get the word out. The event went extremely well, and I was truly proud at how my hard work had paid off to help revive our organization. I’m proud to say they’re still running strong on our campus today!

Whether it's through tabling to meet new students or collaborating with campus dining for catering, each responsibility presents an opportunity to step out of comfort zones. Additionally, events like civic engagement days and welcome gatherings for new students are crucial for cultivating inclusive environments in educational institutions. These activities highlight the importance of representation and the empowerment of marginalized communities. In this evolving landscape, the Free To Be Me organization continues to thrive, reminding us all that celebrating diversity enriches the college experience.
