Tips for your dog during the summer

It’s hot out there! Make sure your dog is safe and comfortable this summer. Here are my tips:

☀️ provide ample water throughout the day

☀️ make sure the pavement isn’t too hot. You can confirm this by holding the back of your hand to the ground for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.

☀️ consider summer booties like Wagwear’s Mojave booties if they have to walk on hot pavement often

☀️monitor their time outside and ensure they have enough breaks from the sun

Dogs can easily suffer from heat-related issues such as overheating and dehydration if precautions aren’t taken. Here are more tips to enhance your dog's summer experience: 1. **Hydration:** Always ensure that your dog has access to fresh water. Hydration is vital, especially during outdoor activities. Consider using portable water bowls for trips to the park. 2. **Proper grooming:** Regular grooming helps to regulate your dog's body temperature. Brushing your dog's coat not only reduces shedding but also can help prevent mats that trap heat. Look for shampoos that protect against sunburn. 3. **Shade and breaks:** When your dog is outside, ensure they have access to shaded areas. Set up a comfortable spot with a blanket or dog bed where they can relax away from direct sunlight. 4. **Timing outdoor activities:** Plan walks or playtime for early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are cooler. This not only protects your dog’s paws but also reduces the risk of heat exhaustion. 5. **Recognizing heat stress:** Familiarize yourself with the signs of heat stress in dogs, which include excessive panting, drooling, or a rapid heartbeat. If you notice these symptoms, bring your dog to a cooler area and offer water immediately. By implementing these practices, you can ensure that your dog enjoys a safe and pleasant summer season. Remember, being proactive about your pet’s wellbeing can lead to a healthier and happier life.
