Tips for leaving your dog home alone

Want to leave your dog alone for the first time? Or want to get them more comfortable with it? Follow these tips:

1. Get a Furbo camera! I love my 360 camera to track movement and keep a watch at all times

2. Test your dog’s ability to stay alone in small increments. Start with 15 minutes and gradually increase over time.

3. Leave food out to distract them and water out at all times

4. Remove anything harmful that may be laying around that you don’t want your dog to get into, such as human food or trash

... Read moreIt can be a really daunting feeling when you first need to leave your beloved furry friend home alone. I remember feeling so guilty and anxious, wondering if my white fluffy dog would be okay in our living room by herself. But over time, and through lots of trial and error, I've gathered some truly effective strategies that have made both me and my pup much more comfortable with solo time. These aren't just generic tips; they come from my personal experience in gradually training my dog to love her alone time! First off, that Furbo camera mentioned in the original post? It's a game-changer! I invested in one, and it gave me so much peace of mind. Being able to check in on my dog, see her curled up in her dog bed or exploring the living room, and even toss her a treat from afar, really helped ease my worries. It’s not just about monitoring; it's about understanding her behavior when I'm not there. Sometimes, just seeing her calmly sleeping showed me she was truly comfortable, helping me gradually extend my time away without guilt. If a Furbo isn't an option, any pet camera can provide similar comfort for keeping an eye on your pup. The key, I learned, is starting small. Don't just leave for hours on end right away. My approach was to begin with very short departures. I'd literally step out the door for 5-10 minutes, then come back in. The goal wasn't to make a big fuss when I left or returned, but to show her that my leaving was no big deal and I'd always come back. I slowly increased this to 15 minutes, then 30, then an hour. This gradual exposure is crucial for building their confidence. Make sure your pup has had a good potty break and some exercise before you leave; a tired dog is often a calm dog! Providing distractions is another huge piece of the puzzle. I always make sure there's fresh water accessible, and I often leave out a puzzle toy stuffed with peanut butter or some kibble. This keeps her mind busy and associates my departure with a positive, tasty activity. It’s a great solution for those first few minutes when they might feel a bit unsettled. Just remember to use treats in moderation! And speaking of safety, you absolutely must 'dog-proof' your home. I quickly realized how many tempting (and dangerous!) things were at my dog's level. Anything harmful – think human foods like chocolate or grapes, medications, cleaning supplies, or even just household trash – needs to be completely out of reach. I use childproof locks on lower cabinets and a secure, lidded trash can. It's about creating a safe, comfortable environment where they can’t get into trouble, whether they're lounging on their dog bed or playing with their toys in the living room. For puppies, a crate can be an excellent safe space, giving them a cozy den where they feel secure and can't chew on anything they shouldn't. Finally, consider the power of routine and ambiance. I found that sticking to a consistent schedule for walks, meals, and alone time helped my dog understand what to expect. Before I leave, I often turn on some calming music or a white noise machine. It creates a soothing background and can help mask outside noises that might make her anxious. It's all about making their solo experience as calm and positive as possible, turning what could be a stressful separation into a peaceful period for your happy, safe pup.
