How I found out I’m allergic to coconut

#storytime #lemon8contest

Coconut has always been one of my favorite foods to eat as well as an essential ingredient to my natural hair products. One day out of the blue I started itching really bad and broke out in a rash all over my upper body. I couldn’t figure out what was going on because I hadn’t eaten anything new or tried any new products. The only thing I remember is eating jerk chicken with rice and peas(which was not out of the ordinary). Anyway, I was given medication to get rid of the allergic reaction. I few days later I brought my favorite Girl Scout cookies, the samoas. After eating them I broke out in the same allergic reaction. Then I realized the connection of the coconut in the cookies and the coconut milk used to cook rice and peas. I was devastated. Imagine all of your skin and hair care products containing this ingredient. Not only that but some of my favorite foods also contained this ingredient. It was such a struggle because anything good for your skin and hair almost always contain coconut. What felt like a curse soon became a blessing because it forced me to think past products that I could buy off the shelf and start researching how to make hair and skin care products that does not contain coconut but are still beneficial to me. Now I live making my own products that are beneficial to myself and my daughters.

... Read moreAfter finally realizing my sudden itching and persistent rashes were tied to beloved coconuts – yes, those seemingly innocent tropical fruits – my whole world of food and skincare was turned upside down! It wasn't just about avoiding a few snacks; it was about understanding the full scope of a coconut allergy and how it manifests. My initial symptoms were severe itching and a widespread rash on my upper body, but I quickly learned that allergic reactions to coconut can vary widely. For some, a coconut allergy might present with digestive issues like nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain after consuming coconut milk or oil. Others might experience swelling of the lips, face, or throat, or even respiratory symptoms like wheezing or shortness of breath. My experience highlighted the challenge in connecting symptoms to such a common ingredient. It led me to research extensively, and I want to share some insights that could help anyone else suspecting a coconut intolerance or allergy. So, once I suspected it was coconuts, what next? The most crucial step is to consult an allergist. They can perform specific tests, such as skin prick tests or blood tests, to confirm an allergy. In my case, an elimination diet, meticulously removing all forms of coconut from my diet and skincare routine, was a huge clue before formal testing. It’s surprising how many products contain coconut derivatives, not just the obvious ones like coconut water or flakes. Living with a coconut allergy means becoming a detective. You learn to scrutinize ingredient labels like a hawk! Terms like 'cocos nucifera oil,' 'capric triglyceride,' 'coco-betaine,' and 'sodium coco sulfate' are all aliases for coconut. This became a real struggle, especially with many 'natural' products advertising the benefits of coconuts for skin and hair. I realized my favorite hair treatments and moisturizers, which I thought were helping, were actually triggering my skin rash. But this challenge, as I mentioned in my initial story, truly became a blessing. It forced me to explore fantastic alternatives. For cooking, I’ve swapped coconut oil for avocado or olive oil. For my hair and skin, I’ve discovered the wonders of shea butter, jojoba oil, and argan oil. These ingredients offer similar moisturizing and nourishing benefits without the allergic reaction. It’s been an empowering journey to formulate my own products, ensuring they are beneficial and, most importantly, safe for me and my daughters. Don't give up hope; navigating a coconut allergy is possible with knowledge and creativity!

I have a friend who's allergic and I thought maybe she's allergic to tree nuts too but I learned coconut is considered a fruit not a nut.
