... Read moreIn discussions about social justice and equality, intersectionality plays a critical role in understanding how different aspects of a person's identity combine to affect their experiences of oppression and privilege. However, it’s common to encounter what are referred to as "whataboutisms" or the "oppression Olympics," where participants try to compete over who suffers more, thereby deflecting from meaningful dialogue. From personal experience, engaging in conversations without resorting to comparisons of oppression can be challenging but rewarding. It requires active listening, empathy, and acknowledgment that everyone’s experience is valid without needing to rank or diminish others’ struggles. When I stopped focusing on winning debates or proving who faces greater challenges, the quality of my interactions improved significantly. Avoiding the "oppression Olympics" also means addressing comments and criticisms directly, rather than sidestepping with counter-accusations or dismissals. This approach helps create a more inclusive environment where all voices can be heard. Practicing this has allowed me to better understand complex social issues, especially how overlapping identities impact people’s lived realities. By focusing on intersectionality with an open mind and avoiding the temptation to engage in whataboutism, we contribute to more constructive and empathetic social conversations, fostering solidarity rather than division.
