Tavern Talk Game Review

👩‍🏫 Background:

Tavern Talk is a visual novel game about DnD-style heroes who accept quests posted by you, the innkeeper. Before venturing out, the innkeeper serves the heroes magical drinks that enhance their ability in intelligence, charisma, defense, etc. When the heroes return, they recount their adventures to the innkeeper.

📝 Short Review:

If you're looking for a great DnD style story with excellent LGBTQ+ representation give this game a try! Be aware its main focus is the story and not any drink or playing mechanics.

The story itself reads more like a light epic tale than a comfort one. If cozy is what you're craving, better to play something like Coffee Talk and return to this game when you want an epic story.

The developers put out content warnings, which I suggest reading before playing the game. I didn't read them until after and I wish I read them before to make sure I was in the right headspace for this game.

🗂️ More In-Depth Review:

✨ Pros:

The story was the best part of Tavern Talk. Throughout the game, you hear little stories/adventures the heroes go on, mainly when they return from a quest. Meanwhile, mysterious stuff is happening with the environment which the innkeeper and heroes try to solve. The game does a great job of building upon each hero's small story and having those feed into the main storyline. This helped create a sense of cohesion that made the main storyline punch that much more. Even without the small storylines, the main story itself was incredibly compelling. I kept playing to see why these environmental things were happening and how it would all be solved.

The representation in this game was another great part. There are a lot of LGBTQ+ characters, plus characters of different ages and backgrounds. Having this wide variety was so nice to dive into and be around. It felt like a reflection of actual people around me.

👀 Cons:

Two not fun things were the drink creation and not really being a "cozy" game. Heroes request drinks with one main component, like they want a lot of charisma for example. There are multiple drinks with a lot of charisma. The drink descriptions say they do slightly different things, but they really don't. You can pick whatever charisma drink and it's fine, which made it feel a bit pointless to have multiple charisma, strength, defense, etc drinks. The only time drinks made an impact was when you had to choose between two types like focusing on being sneaky or strong.

This game being labeled as "cozy" really threw me off. Going into it, I expected something like Coffee Talk which deals with the day-to-day issues of its customers. Tavern Talk didn't do that, instead it went for more DnD inspired tales. This made the story less slice of life and more grand. I would label this game something like a "light epic" than I would a "cozy" game. This isn't bad, but expecting a cozy storyline and getting a light epic instead made the story feel heavier than it truly was. I left the game sadder than I would have because I wasn't quite in the headspace for it.

... Read moreI know many of you, like me, might be wondering about certain aspects of 'Tavern Talk' before diving in. One of the most common questions I've seen is, 'Is there romance in Tavern Talk?' From my playthrough, I can tell you that while the game is rich with character interactions and relationships, explicit romance isn't its primary focus. You'll build strong bonds with the heroes passing through your tavern, acting more as a mentor, confidante, and quest-giver. The dynamic is less about romantic pursuit and more about fostering a sense of community and helping these adventurers grow. The magical drinks you serve are designed to boost their abilities for quests—think stat boosts like 'Swift Strike' for combat or enhanced charisma for diplomacy—not necessarily to sway their hearts! So, if you're looking for a deep romantic storyline, you might find yourself wanting more in that department, as the game focuses more on the grander 'DnD style story' unfolding around you. Another big question is about its 'cozy visual novel' label. As the original review mentioned, this game truly leans into being a 'light epic tale' rather than a cozy slice-of-life experience. I went in expecting something akin to 'Coffee Talk,' a gentle game about daily woes. Instead, 'Tavern Talk' delivers a grander narrative, full of unfolding mysteries and significant events that impact the entire world. It's not a bad thing by any means, but it sets a different tone. The developers even put out content warnings for a reason, which I highly recommend checking out beforehand – I wish I had! It helps set the right expectations for the emotional journey ahead. The stakes often feel much higher than just a quiet evening at the inn, pulling you into a more complex plot. Playing as the innkeeper, I initially thought my role would be purely administrative, perhaps handling 'tavern keeper decor rating' or simple transactions. But it's so much more. You're at the heart of everything, preparing those special potions and listening to the heroes' thrilling accounts of their adventures. While the review touched on the drink mechanics feeling a bit streamlined, I found myself still enjoying the process of matching the right magical brew to each hero's needs. It gave me a sense of agency, even if the choices weren't always complex. Hearing their tales, seeing the impact of my choices on their journeys, and piecing together the larger environmental mystery made me feel like an essential part of this vibrant world. The game truly shines in its world-building and its diverse cast, celebrating 'LGBTQ+ representation' naturally within its fantasy setting. It’s a unique experience, offering a different kind of immersion than your typical visual novel, and kept me hooked until the very end, eager to see how the epic tale concluded!
