A Day as an Environmental Engineer

So many of you asked what a typical day really looks like for an Environmental Engineer, beyond the brief glimpses in my 'mini vlog'! It's not always glamorous, but it's always rewarding. Let me dive deeper into what my role entails and what you can expect if you're considering this amazing field. My days are a dynamic mix of analytical work, problem-solving, and collaboration. One moment I might be reviewing environmental impact assessments for new development projects, ensuring they meet regulations and minimize harm. The next, I could be analyzing data from air or water quality samples to identify pollution sources. It’s all about protecting our planet and human health. You might literally be in the field collecting samples, or in the office designing sustainable waste management systems. The diversity is incredible! Is environmental engineering hard? Absolutely, it can be! It requires a strong foundation in science, math, and critical thinking. We're constantly learning about new technologies and evolving regulations. There are complex problems to solve, often without clear-cut answers, which can be challenging but also incredibly stimulating. But with persistence and a genuine passion for the environment, it's definitely manageable and super fulfilling. Don't let the 'hard' factor deter you – it builds resilience and helps you grow! The scope of environmental engineering is vast – from ensuring safe drinking water and managing hazardous waste to developing renewable energy solutions and consulting on sustainable urban planning. My role often involves a blend of desk work, like the project reviews I mentioned earlier, and sometimes field visits, though my recent days have been more office-based, making that 'change of scenery' for lunch even more welcome! Maintaining work-life balance, as highlighted in my morning skincare routine starting at '7:30 am' and ending the day with 'dinner time!!' and 'girls night<3', is crucial. This field can be demanding, but finding time for personal routines and social connections helps prevent burnout. As a woman in STEM, I've found a supportive community, and it's inspiring to see more women entering and excelling in engineering. We bring diverse perspectives that are vital for innovative solutions. My day often starts with my 'skincare prep' and a good breakfast, fueling me for the day's challenges. Then it's 'Work time!', diving into projects. Lunch at '12:00 pm' is always a welcome break – sometimes even a 'change of scenery' to recharge. Then it’s back to 'Work again:)' until the evening, when I can finally say 'Donewwork!'. The evening wind-down, whether it's 'dinner time!!' or a fun 'girls night<3', is just as important as the workday itself. It's truly a holistic approach to a demanding but rewarding career.
