Misconceptions In The Horror Industry

This is specific for the indie horror industry, but a lot of it overlaps into “A List” movies as well.

It is NOT “easy”. Some people think that it’s super easy to make a film, and that it requires little to no work. That is incorrect. There is a TON of work that goes into it, and each person has a unique and important role.

People who work “behind the scenes” also do not receive as much credit and recognition as they deserve. They do A LOT.

Between lighting, audio, cinema photography/directing, setting up scenes, props, makeup and hair, sfx, directing, marking the set, writing, and SO MUCH MORE, it’s a lot.

Acting is also harder than people think. You have to memorize and practice your lines. It’s not just about remembering the words. It’s also about showing the proper emotions when delivering your lines. You have to walk and carry yourself like the character too, and act like them. It’s not just about reciting words from a script. It’s about telling and showing a story and character on the screen.

Writing is also a lot of work. You can’t just pop out a script in ten minutes. At least not a good one. If you can, then you have a super power lol.

People also think that just because you are in the film industry that means you have a ton of money. That’s not necessarily true. Don’t go into this industry expecting to get filthy rich. Do it because you have a passion for the art. Yes, you can make money, but I’m just saying.

There’s also the misconception that horror isn’t “real” cinema. It often isn’t taken seriously, and that’s a shame. It’s an under appreciated and misunderstood art form.

Some people also tend to think that people who work in horror are all “psychopaths”, and that’s not at all true. First off, that’s ableist behavior to call people “psychopaths” all Willy-nilly as an insult. That’s a VERY REAL PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDER.

Not to mention that people in the horror industry tend to be some of THE NICEST and most COMPASSIONATE people you will ever meet. Just because we make horror films doesn’t mean that we are “evil” or whatever. It’s art. It’s entertainment.

That’s just a few misconceptions that people have about the horror industry, and the entertainment industry in general. #horror #horrorfilm #filmindustry #horrorindustry #letschat

... Read moreThe horror industry often faces a multitude of misconceptions, which not only undermine artists but also misrepresent the genre itself. One key myth is the belief that horror films are easy to create. In reality, the process is intricate and labor-intensive, involving a talented assembly of professionals, each playing a critical role, from cinematographers and sound engineers to set designers and makeup artists. Each facet of production demands hard work and skill, disproving the notion that horror is a low-effort genre. Moreover, the emotional and technical demands of acting in horror films are often overlooked, requiring performers to fully embody their characters beyond mere dialogue. Financial stability in the industry is another misconception. While some may picture success as synonymous with wealth, many horror filmmakers pursue their craft out of sheer passion rather than financial gain. The reality is that making a mark in this genre, much like any other, can be an uphill battle laden with uncertainties. Additionally, horror as a genre is frequently dismissed as not being 'real' cinema, a perspective that dismisses the creative efforts and contributions of its artists. Despite this bias, horror films have garnered significant acclaim and cultural relevance over the years, illustrating the depth and diversity of stories they can tell. Lastly, there's the unfounded stereotype that those who work in horror must share traits with the dark narratives they create. This stigma not only stigmatizes professionals but overlooks the kindness and compassion inherent in those dedicated to horror filmmaking. They aim to evoke emotions and provoke thought through artistic expression, not to indulge in the macabre. Addressing these misconceptions is crucial for fostering a greater appreciation for the horror industry and understanding the dedication that drives the creation of this unique form of entertainment.
