Misconceptions In The Horror Industry
This is specific for the indie horror industry, but a lot of it overlaps into “A List” movies as well.
It is NOT “easy”. Some people think that it’s super easy to make a film, and that it requires little to no work. That is incorrect. There is a TON of work that goes into it, and each person has a unique and important role.
People who work “behind the scenes” also do not receive as much credit and recognition as they deserve. They do A LOT.
Between lighting, audio, cinema photography/directing, setting up scenes, props, makeup and hair, sfx, directing, marking the set, writing, and SO MUCH MORE, it’s a lot.
Acting is also harder than people think. You have to memorize and practice your lines. It’s not just about remembering the words. It’s also about showing the proper emotions when delivering your lines. You have to walk and carry yourself like the character too, and act like them. It’s not just about reciting words from a script. It’s about telling and showing a story and character on the screen.
Writing is also a lot of work. You can’t just pop out a script in ten minutes. At least not a good one. If you can, then you have a super power lol.
People also think that just because you are in the film industry that means you have a ton of money. That’s not necessarily true. Don’t go into this industry expecting to get filthy rich. Do it because you have a passion for the art. Yes, you can make money, but I’m just saying.
There’s also the misconception that horror isn’t “real” cinema. It often isn’t taken seriously, and that’s a shame. It’s an under appreciated and misunderstood art form.
Some people also tend to think that people who work in horror are all “psychopaths”, and that’s not at all true. First off, that’s ableist behavior to call people “psychopaths” all Willy-nilly as an insult. That’s a VERY REAL PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDER.
Not to mention that people in the horror industry tend to be some of THE NICEST and most COMPASSIONATE people you will ever meet. Just because we make horror films doesn’t mean that we are “evil” or whatever. It’s art. It’s entertainment.
That’s just a few misconceptions that people have about the horror industry, and the entertainment industry in general. #horror #horrorfilm #filmindustry #horrorindustry #letschat
