From my experience tutoring students, mastering 汉语拼音 is absolutely crucial. It acts like the building blocks for pronunciation and spelling—without it, learning new words becomes frustrating and slow. Next, basic word recognition sets a strong vocabulary base. Students should be confident identifying common words learned in Primary 1 and 2, and understand their appropriate uses, such as differentiating 的, 得, and 地. This foundation frees cognitive space to learn more complex words in higher grades. Sentence construction is another essential skill. At Primary 3, students begin moving beyond simple sentences into forming compound and complex sentences. This ability significantly eases the transition into writing longer compositions in later years, which many students find challenging if unprepared. A useful technique I advise is practicing 扩句, or sentence expansion. Adding descriptive phrases or details to sentences not only makes writing more interesting but also helps boost language marks in composition. My students often improve their confidence by regularly expanding simple sentences into richer paragraphs. Lastly, building a consistent vocabulary bank is vital. Keeping a vocabulary notebook with useful phrases from textbooks and personal learning helps with revision and composition practice. Reviewing this regularly before exams and when writing compositions reinforces retention. Starting these fundamentals in Primary 3 rather than waiting until Primary 4 or 5 helps avoid the stressful experience of catching up later. The progress seen from consistent foundational work is noticeable—composition writing becomes smoother, exams become manageable, and language learning becomes enjoyable. If you or your child need guidance tailored to their learning pace, reaching out for support early can make a meaningful difference in their language journey. Strong basics now really mean easier writing and better results later!
