Character development is essential in storytelling, especially within dystopian genres where protagonists face extreme challenges and moral dilemmas. The common trope of "Theyâre a 10 but..." highlights characters who might seem perfect on the surface but have significant flaws that deepen their realism and drive plot tension. For example, a character described as "a 10 but she can't get over her ex-boyfriend she had when she was 16" shows emotional vulnerability impacting her decisions. Another, âHeâs a 10 but he keeps going back to his ex,â reflects recurring internal conflict and complexity in relationships. Impulse control and mental instability are also powerful traits that affect character arcs, as seen in the OCR content: "he acts too much on impulse so he runs every plan he makes" or "he's lowkey mentally unstable and has been trying to take control of everyone in America at the ripe age of 23." Such imperfections create tension and unpredictability, making characters more engaging and multifaceted. These contrasting traits contribute to a vivid portrayal of human flaws and psychological depth, which resonate well with readers seeking authentic and complex characters. Writers looking to craft compelling characters in dystopian or any genre can benefit from exploring these psychological nuances, enhancing their storytelling and audience connection. For authors developing main and side characters, incorporating realistic contradictions and layered backstories enriches the narrative fabric. Platforms like Lemon8 and Instagram offer excellent opportunities to share these character insights, connect with like-minded communities, and grow as an author. Engaging with author marketing content, such as advice from creators like Saleema on TikTok, can provide practical ideas for promoting literary works and expanding outreach. In summary, embracing and appreciating the imperfections in "hot main characters" adds depth and relatability, essential for captivating stories that linger in readersâ minds long after the final page.
