After seeing 'Hood Feminism' by Mikki Kendall pop up on my feed so many times, I finally decided to dive in myself, hoping to deepen my understanding of what truly inclusive feminism looks like. And let me tell you, it delivered far more than I expected. Kendall doesn't pull any punches, right from the start she challenges the very foundation of what many of us perceive as mainstream feminist dialogue. One of the most striking points for me, which really echoed the powerful statement 'SOLIDARITY IS STILL FOR WHITE WOMEN' I saw repeated, is how often the movement's focus drifts away from the urgent, life-or-death issues faced by marginalized women. While important conversations about workplace equality or 'leaning in' might dominate, Kendall brilliantly highlights how issues central to survival – like food insecurity, accessible education, and comprehensive health care (beyond just basic reproductive needs) – are frequently sidelined. It made me realize how much of the feminist discourse I'd been exposed to was, indeed, tailored to the comfort and concerns of a very specific, often privileged, demographic. Kendall argues that true feminism must address the systemic barriers that disproportionately affect women of color and other marginalized groups. For instance, the book doesn't shy away from pointing out the silence when Black women are not being hired because of their names or fired for hairstyles, or when schools discriminate against girls of color. These aren't just 'side issues'; they are fundamental attacks on women's autonomy and well-being that mainstream feminism, by its own definition, should be championing. I found myself thinking about the lack of support for basic needs like safe housing, which, when you really think about it, is absolutely a feminist issue because it impacts women's stability and ability to thrive. The book also delves into the critical, often overlooked, experiences of trans women of color, who are among the most likely targets of violence. Kendall powerfully illustrates how their struggles are often co-opted or completely ignored by a movement that claims to be for all women. It’s a stark reminder that if our feminism isn't intersectional and genuinely inclusive of all women's realities, then it risks being irrelevant, or worse, harmful, to those it claims to serve. Reading 'Hood Feminism' wasn't always comfortable; Kendall calls out uncomfortable truths that some might label as 'infighting,' but I saw it as a necessary push for growth and accountability within the feminist movement. It's a call to action to expand our understanding and truly show up for all women, not just a privileged few. This book has genuinely shifted my perspective, making me question what I prioritize in my own activism and how I can better advocate for those whose voices are often unheard. It's not just a book; it's an essential framework for building a more equitable and just world.
