Can you keep up a relationship in med school?
Hi Lemon8, friends! 🍋
This is a bit of a longer post, including a lot of slides regarding relationships and medical school.
I have a lot of friends ask me how I manage a new marriage during the most stressful part of my life, and I wanted to share the dynamic that works best for me and my husband.
*Just as a reminder, this is a personal example, and not to be taken in anyway as a recommendation for you in your own relationships!!*
PA school is incredibly draining, however, many of those in my cohort are in long-term relationships, married, engaged, beginning a new relationship, and a few are happily single! No matter what stage you are at in your own life, as long as you make boundaries between coursework and the rest of your life, there is no reason that you cannot flourish in both aspects.
Slide through to get a better idea of what I mean!

Navigating a demanding program like PA or medical school while nurturing a healthy relationship can feel like juggling flaming torches! Many of us wonder how couples manage, and I've certainly had my share of challenges. But through it all, I've learned that it's absolutely possible to keep your relationship strong and even watch it flourish. First up, let's talk about communication and empathy. It's not just about talking; it's about truly listening and creating a safe space where both partners feel heard. When you're swamped with coursework, it's easy to become insular, but scheduling even 15-20 minutes a day for an undistracted check-in can make a world of difference. My partner and I often use this time to just vent or share small victories. Practicing empathy means trying to put yourself in their shoes, even if you can't fully grasp the stress of their specific program. A simple "I hear you, that sounds incredibly tough" can go a long way in showing understanding and support. It’s about acknowledging their feelings without necessarily having to fix everything. Next, viewing your relationship as a teamwork effort is crucial, especially when it comes to sharing responsibilities. It's not about keeping score – that's a trap many couples fall into, and it can breed resentment. Instead, think about how you can work together as a unit to tackle life's demands. For us, this meant openly discussing our strengths and weaknesses, and delegating tasks accordingly. During my intense study periods, my husband takes on more household duties, and when his work projects are demanding, I pick up the slack. It's about flexibility and supporting each other where needed, rather than demanding a 50/50 split every single day. The goal is mutual support, not perfectly equal contribution at all times. This spirit of compassion and mutual aid is what truly strengthens the bond. Finally, establishing healthy boundaries between your academic life and your relationship is non-negotiable. It means protecting your shared time fiercely, even if it's just a dedicated movie night or a weekend hike. Communicate these boundaries clearly to your partner so they understand when you're truly in study mode and when you're available for connection. It allows you to be fully present in both aspects of your life without feeling constantly pulled in different directions. Prioritizing each other means making small gestures of affection and appreciation, even when time is scarce. It's these consistent efforts that build resilience and ensure your relationship doesn't just survive, but truly thrives amidst the rigors of medical or PA school.
