Physician assistant versus associate 🌸

What is the big deal with the PA name going on right now? For years, the PA pneumonic stood for “physician(‘s) assistant”. However, this title is confusing in somewhat demeaning as PAs are license practitioners, who are able to make medical decisions of their own accord without working underneath a doctor.

This is why there has been major legislation to push a name change from “physician(‘s) assistant” to “physician associate”.

Not only does this remove the implication that PAs must work underneath a doctor, but it provides a clearer job title outlining a profession that works an alongside other medical professionals rather than assisting one doctor.
