Not Yet, But Still

We stand in a place

that isn’t quite love,

not yet named

but carrying weight

all the same.

I watch you drift

just out of reach,

your questions shallow,

your eyes scanning horizons

I don’t belong to.

Your silence speaks

where words used to bloom,

echoing a truth

I don’t want to name.

You look at me

with eyes searching past my face,

seeking a spark,

a piece of someone

I don’t carry in my skin.

I twist myself into questions

Am I too much?

Or not enough?

Or simply the wrong shape

for the space you wish to fill?

I crave someone

who wants to know

the secret rivers of my heart

who listens when I whisper

the softest parts of me.

So I step back,

softly but surely,

realizing your silence says

what your words will not.

That you’re searching

for something else,

someone else,

something I don’t carry

in my skin,

nor hide behind my smile.

This work delves into the nuances of emotional connection, exploring how silence can overshadow spoken words, leaving gaps that convey profound truths. The imagery painted in this piece serves as a mirror to the universal experience of yearning for intimacy and understanding from others who might be searching too. The poet reflects on the weight of unacknowledged love—a feeling that is not yet defined but felt deeply in the heart. Through vivid metaphorical language, the piece captures the essence of vulnerability and the internal struggle of questioning one's worth in a relationship that seems to falter under the weight of unexpressed desires. This resonates particularly within the context of modern relationships where genuine connections are often muddled by external expectations and self-doubt. The plea for a partner willing to explore the 'secret rivers' of one's heart highlights the human need for someone who can appreciate both the strength and fragility of our emotions. It reinforces the truth that real intimacy goes beyond mere physical presence; it demands active engagement with the emotional landscapes that shape our identities. Moreover, the notion that someone can search for connection yet still remain distant reflects the complexities of human relationships today. Readers are invited to reflect on their journeys—are they truly seen and understood, or are they drifting apart, held back by insecurities and the fear of vulnerability? In essence, 'Not Yet, But Still' invites readers into a contemplative space where they can explore their own feelings of longing and the significance of silence, ultimately asking: How do we find our way to each other when words fall short? This poignant question lingers, inviting introspection and a deeper understanding of the emotional threads that bind us.
