Would you choose healthcare again?

Talked with some of my nurse friends last night about career shifts and to my knowledge they said if they had to choose healthcare all over again …… They wouldn’t! 😮‍💨

Working in a small rural hospital has definitely given me a different outlook on things!

If you work in healthcare what are your thoughts?

What other careers would you be interested in?

... Read moreChoosing a career in healthcare is often seen as a noble and fulfilling path, but experiences can vary greatly depending on the work environment and personal expectations. Nurses and healthcare workers in rural hospitals face unique challenges, including limited resources, heavier workloads, and sometimes a lack of support compared to their urban counterparts. These factors can heavily influence how they view their careers over time. Many healthcare professionals enter the field with a strong passion for helping others, motivated by the meaningful impact they can make on patients’ lives. However, realities such as long shifts, emotional strain, and often lower pay than expected can lead to burnout. This is especially true in smaller, rural hospitals where staffing shortages can increase pressure on each individual. Despite these difficulties, rural healthcare settings also offer benefits such as close-knit community relationships and the ability to see tangible improvements in patients over time. Nevertheless, the sentiment shared by some nurse friends—that they might not choose healthcare again—speaks to the need for better support systems, workplace improvements, and mental health resources in these environments. For those in healthcare considering a career shift, there are numerous alternative fields where their skills and compassion are valuable. These include healthcare administration, public health, medical education, or even transitioning to allied health professions like physical therapy or healthcare technology roles. Exploring further education or certification can help healthcare workers pivot while still leveraging their medical knowledge. Ultimately, career decisions are highly personal. Engaging in open conversations about the pros and cons of healthcare careers, especially from those with firsthand rural hospital experience, can provide valuable insight for both newcomers and seasoned professionals. If you’re in healthcare, reflecting on what aspects of your job are fulfilling and which cause stress can guide you in making informed decisions about your future career direction.

This is such a real question. I love the work of healthcare, but the system? That’s the part that makes people pause. I don’t regret choosing a helping profession, but I do wish the structure supported providers the way we’re expected to support everyone else. If I were choosing again, I’d still want work centered around care, healing, and people but probably with more autonomy and sustainability built in.

No I wouldn't. I'm more embarrassed about what I do now. The system sucks
