First Line of Popular Books Board

There's something truly magical about the very first line of a beloved book, isn't there? It sets the stage, introduces us to new worlds, and hooks us from the start. That's why I think a "First Line of Popular Books" bulletin board is such a fantastic idea for any library, classroom, or even a cozy reading nook at home! When I was putting together my display, I couldn't help but include the iconic opening from *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone*: "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were happy to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much." It immediately transports you back to that sense of impending wonder and mystery, perfectly setting up the epic adventure that follows. For anyone looking to create their own Harry Potter bulletin board, incorporating that first line is a must! Beyond just the text, you can really lean into the theme. Think about your bulletin board border: I’ve seen some great ideas, like using a border that resembles the Hogwarts Express ticket, or perhaps a golden snitch pattern. You could even create a DIY border with cutouts of potion bottles, wands, or house crests. For the cards themselves, using a font that evokes the magical world or adding subtle background textures from the books – like newspaper clippings from the Daily Prophet or the Marauder's Map – can make a huge difference. Imagine having the opening line of Harry Potter prominently displayed, perhaps surrounded by elements hinting at the secrets of Hogwarts! Beyond Harry Potter, the OCR also reminded me of other fantastic first lines that are perfect for this type of display. For instance, "The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind and another his mother called him 'WILD THING!' and Max said 'I'LL EAT YOU UP!' so he was sent to bed without any supper." from Where the Wild Things Are is instantly captivating and playful. Or the simple yet profound, "Once there was a tree... and she loved a little boy." from *The Giving Tree*. And who could forget "In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf." from *The Very Hungry Caterpillar*? Each of these lines creates such a strong visual and emotional connection, inviting readers of all ages to dive into the story. Designing individual cards for each of these, perhaps using colors and styles inspired by the book covers, would make for a vibrant and engaging display. Using tools like Canva, as the original creator did, makes it incredibly easy to design these elements, print them out, and bring your literary vision to life!
