For example, Kussmaul's respirations, characterized by deep and labored breathing, typically indicate metabolic acidosis seen in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Identifying this pattern early can prompt immediate glucose and electrolyte management to prevent deterioration. Cheyne-Stokes breathing presents with a crescendo-decrescendo pattern and periodic apnea, often associated with congestive heart failure or stroke. Recognizing this irregularity helps nurses anticipate potential cardiac or neurological complications. Biot's breathing involves groups of quick, shallow breaths followed by apnea and is usually a sign of increased intracranial pressure from brain injury. This breathing pattern signals the need for rapid neurologic assessment and intervention to prevent further brain damage. In contrast, hyperventilation relates to high anxiety or panic states, where patients breathe rapidly and deeply. Reassurance and calming techniques alongside oxygen therapy can help restore normal breathing. Importantly, recognizing these abnormal patterns alongside the concept of eupnea—normal breathing with a rate of 12-20 breaths per minute—helps nurses differentiate between physiologic and pathologic respiratory states.
