Acting on Intrusive Thoughts

Quick Storytime:

So… I woke up today and thought a tattoo would be really cool. I’m and Ariana Grande and Rihanna Stan and I have always thought that theirs were absolutely gorgeous. I also have always had a Pinterest board of tattoos that I wanted once I moved out of my strict Ghanaian parents house so it wasn’t that intrusive?

Today I got my nails done and decided that they were very ugly and some tattoos on my fingers would make them look better. I ended up looking up tattoo shops near me. I called the first one that popped up and asked if they took walk-ins they said yes and without doing any research, I went in, chose a random butterfly that I looked up five minutes prior and well you see what happened.

The reason I regret this is because I have a very addictive personality and the moment I like something I completely indulge in it. I love these so much and I want to get the rest of my fingers along with a bunch of others done like tomorrow. I know that it is not the smartest financial decision for me right now, not to mention I am still under 2 extremely strict Christian Ghanaian parents who flipped on me when they saw that I got a second piercing on my ear lobe. I have always been the more “rebellious child“ so even though I know they will be surprised, I feel like the surprise won’t be that bad because it’s like, oh it’s her of course she would do something like this.

Anyways I’m in love with them and think they’re so cute. I would rate the pain for the heart a 6/10 because it was so quick and then the butterfly would be a 8/10 because he went over it a bunch of times. I got it done about eight hours ago and honestly, it’s still tingles a little bit.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk🤭🤭

... Read moreReading about your spontaneous finger tattoos really resonated with me! It's so easy to get caught up in the moment and make impulsive decisions, especially when it comes to something as exciting as new ink. Your story perfectly illustrates the thrill and the aftermath of acting on those sudden urges. Many of us have thought about getting a tattoo on a whim, much like you did after seeing beautiful designs or just feeling like a change. The immediate gratification can be incredibly tempting. However, as you've highlighted, these impulsive decisions often come with a unique set of considerations, from financial impacts to navigating family reactions. If you're contemplating an impulsive tattoo, here are a few things I've learned that might help: Firstly, research is your best friend, even if it feels like it dampens the spontaneity. A quick call to a reputable shop, checking their portfolio online, and reading reviews can save a lot of heartache. For finger tattoos specifically, it’s crucial to know that they can fade faster and require more touch-ups due to constant hand movement and exposure. The pain level you described for your butterfly tattoo (8/10) is also a good reminder that placement matters! Fingers are notoriously sensitive. Secondly, think about the long-term impact. While you love your new ink, you also mentioned concerns about your parents and your addictive personality. This is where the concept of 'self-acceptance reasons' really comes into play. It's about finding peace with your choices, even if they were made quickly. Will this tattoo affect your job, your relationships, or your comfort level in certain situations? These aren't meant to deter, but to ensure you're making a truly informed impulsive decision. Thirdly, aftercare for finger tattoos is paramount. Unlike other areas, hands are constantly in use, exposed to soaps, water, and friction. My advice? Keep them clean with a mild, unscented soap, moisturize with a thin layer of tattoo-specific balm, and avoid direct sunlight or harsh chemicals. You mentioned yours still tingles after eight hours, which is normal, but diligent aftercare will prevent infection and ensure your beautiful new designs heal well and last longer. Finally, if you find yourself prone to impulsive decisions but want to get a tattoo, consider a 'cooling-off' period. Maybe design it, save the picture, and revisit it in a week or two. If you still love it just as much, then go for it! This way, you get the excitement of the idea without the potential for regret. Ultimately, tattoos are a form of self-expression, and whether they're planned meticulously or the result of a sudden urge, they become a part of your story. Embrace your journey, just as you're embracing your new beautiful ink!

OCD doesn’t get the final say. My thoughts aren’t facts—they’re just thoughts. I can let them pass without chasing them, trust that I’m safe in this moment, and allow joy in without fear. Uncertainty is part of being human, and I’m learning to meet it with courage instead of control. 💜✨ #OCDRec
