Today I shared a night portrait experience using flash.
1.Camera setting (Parameters)
Focal Length: Use Wide-Angle Lens, About $27mm $
Mode: Use M (Manual) mode to control the flash firing yourself.
ISO: Set around $400-640 $(to control overall brightness of the image)
Shutter Speed (Shutter Speed): Between $1 / 200s $(or according to the camera's safe Shutter Speed)
3 basic knowledge:
ISO controls the overall brightness of the image.
Shutter Speed controls the brightness of the backdrop / environment.
Aperture (Aperture) controls the brightness of the subject (Subject)
2. Practical Knowledge
Real-time view: Because the backdrop is very dark, turn on the "Natural Real-Time View" function in the camera to see the subject more clearly in the viewfinder.
Guidance:
Select gestures that look over or expressive to add dimension and interest to the image with a wide-angle lens.
Tapered Leg Trick: If the subject's legs are placed at the edge of the image, a wide-angle lens can extend the legs to look longer.
Important taboo! ❌ Do not place the subject's header on the edge of the image, because it can twist the face. 🫠
View: Try shooting from a high angle (Top View) or a low angle will get different results.
Clothes: Clothes with bright colors (e.g. denim / denim clothes) should be chosen because they are very suitable for this style of photography.
3. Post-Retouching
Tone: Adapt the image to have a bluish-green and retro tone (Retro Tone), especially the shadow area, to be dull green and gray.
Film feel: Saturation is added to all colors in the image to make the image more dimensional and more like the image from the film camera.
