Filipino Bakeries are the BEST! 🇵🇭
As a huge fan of Filipino pastries, I'm always on the hunt for the best spots to satisfy my cravings in Chicago. If you're like me and looking to discover some amazing Filipino bakeries, you've come to the right place! I’ve explored high and low, tasting everything from warm pandesal to vibrant ube treats, and I’m thrilled to share my personal top 5 recommendations with you. Get ready to embark on a delicious journey! First up on my list is the charming Del Sur Filipino Bakery & Cafe. What immediately struck me about Del Sur Filipino Bakery was its warm, inviting atmosphere and the incredible aroma of freshly baked goods. It’s truly a little slice of home right here in Chicago. I recently discovered their new offerings, and I can confidently say their ensaymada is out of this world – perfectly soft, buttery, and topped with just the right amount of cheese. Their pandesal is also a must-try, especially when it’s fresh out of the oven. It's the perfect spot for a morning coffee and a sweet treat, or to pick up some goodies for your family. Next, you absolutely have to visit Sampaguita Sweets. This place is a gem for traditional Filipino desserts. Their bibingka, a classic rice cake, reminds me so much of childhood fiestas. It’s cooked to perfection with a slightly smoky flavor and a tender, moist texture. Their puto (steamed rice cakes) are also incredibly light and fluffy, pairing perfectly with savory dishes or enjoyed on their own. It’s a wonderful spot if you’re looking for authentic flavors that transport you straight to the Philippines. For those who are obsessed with all things ube, Ube Dreams is your paradise. This bakery specializes in modern Filipino pastries with an emphasis on the beloved purple yam. Their ube crinkles are chewy and rich, and the ube cheesecake is a revelation – creamy, subtly sweet, and beautifully purple. I also adore their ube lattes, which are a unique and delicious twist on a classic coffee shop drink. If you want to experience ube in all its glorious forms, Ube Dreams is a non-negotiable stop. Then there’s Pinoy Pan House, my go-to for freshly baked breads. The moment you step in, you're greeted by the comforting scent of baked goods. Their pandesal is arguably the best in the city – always warm, soft, and slightly sweet, making it perfect for breakfast or as a snack throughout the day. I also highly recommend trying their Spanish bread, which has a sweet, buttery filling that's absolutely addictive. It’s a no-frills spot focused on delivering excellent quality everyday Filipino breads. Finally, rounding out my top five is Maharlika Bakeshop. This family-run bakery has a vast selection of Filipino classics. I always pick up their hopia, flaky pastries filled with sweet bean paste, which are perfect for sharing (or hoarding, no judgment here!). Their mamon, a fluffy sponge cake, is also incredibly delicate and delicious. Maharlika Bakeshop is a fantastic all-rounder, offering everything from savory empanadas to elaborate custom cakes for special occasions. It’s a place where you can find something for everyone. Exploring these Filipino bakeries has been such a joy, and I hope my recommendations help you discover your new favorite spot. Each bakery offers something unique, from traditional recipes to modern twists, all while celebrating the rich culinary heritage of the Philippines. Happy tasting, Chicago!
