... Read moreHot take parenting, especially when it comes to feeding, challenges the traditional ‘clean your plate’ rule that many of us grew up with. The idea that kids shouldn't be made to eat what is cooked for dinner if they don't like it is gaining traction because it prioritizes a fed and happy child over strict mealtime rules. Forcing children to eat can lead to resistance, negative associations with food, and even longer-term eating difficulties. Instead, allowing flexibility encourages a more positive relationship with food. Parents might offer alternative options or prepare something different if a child refuses the main dish. This approach respects children’s developing tastes and autonomy. Moreover, a happy, well-fed child is likely to have better emotional regulation and fewer mealtime tantrums. It also reduces anxiety around eating for both parents and kids. Hot take parenting in this regard focuses on meeting children's nutritional needs without conflict, which supports their overall well-being. In practice, this means parents might keep a rotation of healthy alternatives or involve kids in meal planning, helping them feel more engaged and in control. It’s not about giving in to picky eating indefinitely but cultivating a balanced eating pattern over time without negativity. Ultimately, emphasizing that ‘a fed and happy child is what’s important’ aligns with broader parenting goals of fostering a nurturing and supportive family environment.

I try to have my kids at least try the food! If they end up not liking it - i won’t force them to finish it and make something else!
