That Sik Luv by Jescie Hall

Well, all the hype I heard about this book really set me up for failure. I couldn't finish this unfortunately 😕 I tried and tried to get through it but it just seemed very disjointed. I was hooked at the start as I love a good religious cult dark romance. Dismantling the organization and all that. But I just think this could have been so much better. The FMC doesn't make sense to me given that she's been raised this way her entire life and seems to flip so easily, there's not that true struggle of unlearning. The MMC is unhinged, and honestly, I love that lol He makes so much sense to me, it's just fitting everything together that doesn't match up. While the MMC has a clear focus and hatred for this religious cult, the FMC just follows along. She obviously witnesses something atrocious but the reality of that situation, in most cases, would be her struggle to fight it and then finally accept and make a move to stop it. When you're brainwashed for 18-20 something years of your life, there needs to be some kind of self reflection and breakdown. The pace was rushed and I just couldn't make it through. HOWEVER, both voice actors for the audio are amazing, especially Joe Arden. He always reads the most unhinged characters so well and I always look forward to his narrations.

... Read moreIn 'That Sik Luv', the narrative centers around a dark romance intertwined with cult themes. Readers often seek books that effectively portray the inner conflict of characters grappling with their upbringing, especially in a cult-like setting. This genre resonates due to its exploration of liberation from oppressive ideologies. The protagonist’s inability to articulate her struggles raises important questions about character development in dark romances. A well-crafted dark romance should encapsulate the tension between desire and fear, portraying the protagonist's journey toward self-discovery and empowerment. Moreover, the duality of the characters, especially the unhinged male lead, adds to the complexity of the story, often captivating readers. Voice narration, especially by talented actors like Joe Arden, can significantly enhance the reading experience. This brings us to the significance of audio formats in today's literary landscape—enabling readers to connect with the emotional nuances of characters they may not fully grasp in text alone. Such performances provide insight into nuanced emotional landscapes, making the story feel more alive. In summary, 'That Sik Luv' serves as a case study in the challenges of character consistency within dark romantic narratives, highlighting the importance of depth and authenticity.
