Detailed Instructions — Timing It So Everything’s Hot:
Step 1: Start the popcorn chicken — 15 min:
Preheat oven or air fryer: Your Tyson bag says 400°F for 15-18 min.
Bake/Air fry: Spread chicken in single layer. Air fryer 400°F for 10-12 min, shaking halfway. Oven 400°F for 15-18 min, flipping once. Crispy chicken = better bowls. Soggy = sad.
Step 2: Mashed potatoes — 5 min while chicken cooks
Boil liquids: In medium saucepan, bring 2 cups water + 1 cup milk + 3 Tbsp butter + ½ tsp salt to a boil.
Stir in flakes: Remove from heat, stir in 2 cups dry potato flakes. Let stand 30 sec. Fluff with fork.
Keep warm: Cover and set aside. If they get thick, stir in 1-2 Tbsp warm milk.
Step 3: Corn + Gravy:
Corn: Drain 15 oz can. Microwave bowl 2-3 min or heat in small pot on stovetop 3-4 min. Add pat of butter + pinch of salt if you want.
Gravy: In small saucepan, whisk gravy packet + 2 cups cold water. Bring to boil over medium-high, whisking constantly. Reduce heat, simmer 1 min until thick. Whisking prevents lumps.
Step 4: Assemble the bowls:
Use 6 wide, shallow bowls. Layer in this order so it looks like KFC:
Base: ¾ to 1 cup mashed potatoes. Spread to edges.
Corn: ¼ cup hot corn over potatoes. Don’t mix — you want layers.
Chicken: 8-10 pieces crispy popcorn chicken. Pile it on.
Gravy: Ladle ⅓ cup hot brown gravy over chicken. Let it drip down.
Cheese: Big pinch of shredded cheddar on top while everything’s hot so it melts. About ⅓ cup per bowl.
Tips for “Yummy KFC Bowls:
Crispy chicken is non-negotiable: Oven or air fryer only. Microwave chicken = rubber. If it’s not crunchy, the gravy makes it mush.
Order of operations: Chicken takes longest. Get it in first, then potatoes, then corn/gravy while chicken cooks. Everything finishes together.
Gravy thickness: You want it pourable but not watery. If it’s too thick, whisk in 1-2 Tbsp hot water. Too thin, simmer 1 min longer.
Cheese melt: Add cheese last and serve immediately. The hot gravy + chicken melts it perfectly .
Pre-shredded works, but freshly shredded melts better.
Salt check: Between instant potatoes, gravy packet, cheese, and chicken, this is salty. Don’t add extra salt until you taste. Corn is your only “unsalted” layer.
Make it “famous”: KFC uses a peppery chicken gravy. Add ¼ tsp black pepper + ¼ tsp garlic powder to your brown gravy for that kick.
Scaling: This makes 6 big bowls like the pic. For 4 people, use ⅔ of everything. For 2, halve it but cook full chicken bag — leftovers are great.
Homemade swaps: Real mashed potatoes = 2½ lbs russet potatoes + ½ cup milk + 4 Tbsp butter. Homemade gravy = 2 Tbsp drippings + 2 Tbsp flour + 2 cups broth. But the point of this recipe is fast.
Texture goal: Creamy potatoes on bottom, sweet corn pop, crunchy chicken, savory gravy, melty cheese on top. Every bite should have all 5 layers.
Add-ins if you’re fancy: Crispy bacon bits, chopped green onions, dash of hot sauce. But Why would you keep it simple.
