Sensory vs Behavior
As a parent, do you find yourself asking the question "is my child looking for sensory input or is it behavior?"
.
.
The answer to your question is that it is both! Behavior is defined as the way an individual reacts to a certain situation or stimuli. Behavior is a form of communication. Your child may be trying to communicate with you that they’re feeling dysregulated and need support for sensory regulation. It is our job to translate what our child’s behaviors are trying to tell us. Your child may be reacting due to too much or too little sensory stimuli. To address this, we encourage incorporating sensory strategies into your child’s routine, identifying and preventing triggers, and strengthening the gap in your child's skills. Some examples of skill gaps are language and communication, emotional regulation, and impulse control.
