S6. Ep14. Older and Far Away

When I first rewatched 'Older and Far Away,' my biggest takeaway was the feeling that we barely scratched the surface with Dawn. It's meant to be her episode, her birthday wish causing all the trouble, yet I felt like we didn't really get inside her head. After Buffy's traumatic resurrection, Dawn is clearly struggling for attention and a sense of belonging, and the wish is a desperate cry. But instead of exploring her guilt or her deeper fears, it felt more like a plot device to trap everyone. I kept thinking, imagine the emotional weight if they had delved into why she wished what she did, or the resentment she might feel, rather than just the immediate consequence. And that leads me to the broader 'missed opportunities' in *S6. Ep14. Older and Far Away*. Trapping the Scooby Gang in a house with a demon that feeds on wishes could have been a goldmine for character interaction and psychological drama. We could have seen deeper confessions, old resentments surface, or even characters confronting their innermost desires. Instead, much of it felt a bit...surface level. I yearned for more tension, more personal stakes beyond just getting out. The potential for exploring the group's dynamics under pressure, especially given the tumultuous events of Season 6, was immense, but it felt somewhat untapped. But then there was Tara. Oh, Tara! In a season often criticized for its darkness and moral ambiguity, Tara truly shines as a beacon of warmth and reason. Her gentle strength, her unwavering love for Willow, and her clear-headedness provided such a stark contrast to the chaos. For me, she was the emotional anchor of 'Older and Far Away,' offering a grounded perspective amidst the magical mayhem. Every scene with her felt like a breath of fresh air, reminding us of the genuine good that still existed in Sunnydale. She really embodied the spirit of BECOMING BUFFY in terms of finding inner strength and compassion, even when things were falling apart around her. Thinking about alternative ideas, I always thought it would have been powerful if the wish demon forced characters to confront their real wishes, or if the house itself manifested their deepest fears. What if Giles had to confront his desire to leave Sunnydale permanently, or Xander his commitment issues with Anya? Even a deeper dive into Buffy's post-resurrection trauma within the confined space could have been incredibly impactful. The magical rules of the wish felt a bit inconsistent, too, which always left me wanting more explanation or a more creative resolution. Despite my criticisms, that ending always brings a smile to my face. After so much gloom and doom in Season 6, seeing everyone genuinely happy, enjoying a simple birthday celebration, was incredibly cathartic. It was a rare moment of peace and connection for the Scoobies, a reminder that even amidst the darkness, there's always hope for joy and togetherness. It makes S6. Ep14. Older and Far Away memorable, even with its flaws, for giving us that much-needed moment of lightness and a glimpse of what happiness could look like for them.
