Typical Xander
Oh, Xander. How we simultaneously want to shake you and also give you a hug. This episode is a hard watch because while we understand Xander's fear of becoming just like the people who traumatized him, it doesn't justify him hurting Anya in the process. We don't fix our problems by running away from them. We stay and we work through them.
Mark Field says it well: "you don't avoid becoming your father by running and hiding from the situation. You avoid becoming your father by being in the same situation and being different."
Sadly, we don't have much hope that the show will dig much further into Xander's psyche. The writers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are very good at exploring the depth of trauma and its impact on mental health, however they often seem to fall short when it comes to depicting the journey towards recovery.
Can we get some therapy for the Scoobies??

In the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xander Harris is a character who evokes both sympathy and frustration. His journey through trauma is marked by raw emotional confrontation, particularly in episodes like 'Hell's Bells,' where the impact of his past is palpable. Understanding the essence of growing from one’s trauma is a recurring theme in the show. Mark Field's quote highlights that avoiding the cycle of generational trauma requires facing one's fears and making conscious choices rather than running away. In analyzing Xander's actions, we must consider the developmental aspects of his character throughout the series; his growth is often hindered by the ghosts of his past. While the writers adeptly explore trauma's effects, the journeys of recovery and healing are sometimes overlooked, leaving fans to ponder the potential for deeper development. Many fans have expressed a desire for the Scoobies to seek therapy, illustrating an awareness of the importance of mental health in navigating their chaotic lives.
