a morning with a first grade teacher 🍎✏️

The morning prep (with a chai) waiting for the kiddos to arrive. I absolutely LOVE first grade. I cannot believe the school year is almost over.

In our class: we get dojo points for many things like being kind, raising their hand, being helpful, being respectful, etc. Once they get 10 points, they get a dojo ticket and their points clear so they can reach another 10 points. They can cash in their dojo tickets for anything they want! This incentive honestly has worked all year for me. They love cashing in! 🎟️

Also at the end of each week, I pick a “Bee of the Week” that student gets to spend Monday (all day) doing work from the ‘bee hive’ reading book. The kids absolutely love the bean bag corner 🐝

... Read moreTeaching first graders can be both rewarding and challenging. Many educators find that creating an engaging and structured environment fosters a love of learning among young students. Using systems like dojo points helps motivate children by rewarding positive behavior and participation. Teachers often implement creative incentives to maintain student interest, ensuring that everyone feels involved in the class. Additionally, designating a 'Bee of the Week' allows children to feel a sense of accomplishment and encourages goal-setting. This weekly recognition can heighten enthusiasm, prompting students to strive for excellence. Many teachers also incorporate hands-on activities into their lessons, such as reading from a 'hive' of books, which can be particularly effective in literacy development. Classroom design and comfort play a crucial role as well; areas like cozy reading corners with bean bags can enhance a student's learning experience. Creating a nurturing atmosphere where students feel safe to express themselves is essential in early education. As the school year progresses, these practices not only boost academic performance but also build a supportive classroom community that values kindness and respect.
