Mothman? 🫶 Mothwoman? 🥰🥰🥰

Hey everyone! I'm so thrilled to share the story behind my latest creations: my whimsical Moth fae, or as some might call them, Mothwomen! You might be wondering, 'Mothman? But make it magical and feminine?' And my answer is, 'Why not?!' I've always been fascinated by folklore and cryptids, and the idea of a 'Mothwoman' truly sparked my imagination. I wanted to create beings that felt ancient, mysterious, and deeply connected to nature, much like a moth, but imbued with the ethereal beauty and magic of fae. For these particular pieces, I delved into the world of watercolor painting and colored pencil work to bring my vision to life. The process began with sketching out the basic forms of these fae-like women, focusing on flowing lines and elegant poses. Then came the magic of watercolors. I love how watercolors allow for such delicate layering and luminous effects. For the figure with green skin and a hooded cloak, I used soft washes of emerald and moss greens, building up translucent layers to give her skin an otherworldly glow. The hooded cloak was painted with deeper, earthy tones to create a sense of mystery and shadow. The second figure, with her striking yellow skin and braided reddish-purple hair, was an exploration of warmer, more vibrant tones. I really enjoyed playing with the contrast between her warm skin and the cool tones in her hair. Using colored pencils over the dried watercolor base added incredible depth and detail. This is where the intricacies really come alive – defining the pointed ears, adding texture to the braided hair, and highlighting the magical aesthetic that truly makes them fae. I focused on delicate lines and subtle shading to give them a soft, yet powerful presence. My goal was to evoke a sense of quiet magic and wonder. I imagine these Mothwomen as guardians of forgotten forests or whispered secrets, flitting through moonlit groves. The 'moth' aspect comes from their subtle, often nocturnal beauty, their delicate wings (even if not explicitly shown, it's in their spirit!), and their connection to transformation. The 'fae' element brings in that ancient, mystical charm, with their elongated features and deep connection to the natural world. If you're an aspiring artist, I highly recommend experimenting with mixing mediums like watercolor and colored pencil. It allows for such versatility and a unique finish.
