ADHD and being sick
Ever notice your ADHD feels worse when you’re sick? You’re not imagining it.
When you’re ill, your immune system releases inflammatory cytokines that affect the brain, especially areas tied to attention, motivation, and executive function.
At the same time, sickness often disrupts sleep, hydration, blood sugar, and medication absorption, all of which ADHD brains rely on for regulation.
Add in physical fatigue and reduced dopamine signaling, and suddenly:
• Focus drops
• Emotional regulation is harder
• Task initiation feels impossible
• Time blindness gets worse
This is sometimes called sickness behavior, a real, biological brain response, not a lack of willpower.
