Energy saving in my apartment ✨💡
💡Here are some easy ways I save energy in my apartment. I’ll go into a little bit more detail down below.
🌍 1. Unplug any unused appliances or TVs or chargers when you leave the house as a reminder and if you’re a girl who forgets if you unplugged the flat iron and not starting to do, this will help with that habit.
2. Instead of running the dryer every time you wash your sheets, start air, drying your sheets to save energy and make your sheets last longer with good have good quality longer.
3. Use natural lighting while the sun is out for a long time.
4. Only run the dishwasher or switch to hand washing your dishes once a day. It’s okay to let them pile up for a little bit instead of running the water every time you eat.
Hey everyone! Following up on my initial tips, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into how I truly maximize energy savings in my apartment without feeling like I'm sacrificing comfort. It's not just about cutting down your electric bill; it's also about being mindful of our planet, which is a win-win in my book! Beyond Unplugging: Smart Power Management You know how I mentioned unplugging things like your toaster or air fryer? Well, I've taken that a step further with smart power strips. These are amazing for 'vampire electronics' – those devices that suck power even when they're off. Think about your TV, gaming console, or even your coffee maker. Plugging them into a smart strip means I can switch off multiple items at once with a single click, or even set a schedule. It's super convenient and ensures I'm not wasting energy when I'm out or asleep. I noticed a real difference when I started doing this, especially with my home office setup. Optimizing Your Thermostat Settings This is a big one for apartment dwellers! Many of us just set it and forget it, but slight adjustments can save a lot. During the colder months, I try to keep my thermostat around 68°F (about 20°C) when I'm home and drop it to 60-62°F (15-17°C) when I'm at work or sleeping. In summer, I aim for 75-78°F (24-26°C). Even better, I invested in a programmable thermostat. It automatically adjusts the temperature based on my schedule, so my apartment is cool/warm when I get home but not constantly running while I'm away. It felt like a small splurge at first, but it paid for itself in reduced electric bills pretty quickly! Maximizing Natural Light & Insulation We already talked about using natural light, which is fantastic. But what about when the sun goes down or it's super hot/cold? I found that heavy, insulated curtains or blinds are a game-changer. In winter, I keep them open during the day to let the sun warm my apartment, then close them at dusk to trap that warmth in. In summer, it's the opposite – I keep them closed during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun and keep the heat out. Also, check for drafts around your windows and doors. Simple draft stoppers or weatherstripping can make a huge difference in preventing heated or cooled air from escaping. I even noticed a cool breeze coming from under my front door, which I fixed with a cheap door snake! Smarter Laundry Habits Air drying sheets is awesome, but for clothes that need the dryer, there are still ways to save. I always try to run full loads in my washer and dryer – half-empty loads are such a waste of water and electricity. And a big one: washing clothes in cold water! Most modern detergents work just as well in cold water, and heating water uses a significant amount of energy. Plus, it's gentler on your clothes, making them last longer, which is another win for my wallet! Kitchen Appliance Efficiency Beyond hand-washing dishes, think about how you use your other kitchen appliances. Your refrigerator works most efficiently when it's not overstuffed, allowing air to circulate. Also, make sure its coils are clean (a quick vacuum once a year can do wonders!). When cooking, try using smaller appliances like that air fryer or a microwave instead of the big oven whenever possible. Ovens use a lot of energy to heat up and cool down, so if you're just heating a small meal, a smaller appliance is much more efficient. I've become obsessed with my slow cooker for meals that simmer all day, saving me oven time and energy!
