Understanding a dog's personality is key to a happy companionship, and my 10-year-old German Shepherd, Nala, is a perfect example of a dog with a truly unique character. The moment she sees the shampoo bottle or hears the running water in the tub, she gives us the most dramatic, betrayed look imaginable. Getting her bathed is a two-person operation, often involving bribery and the promise of treats. However, take this same 10-year-old German Shepherd to the beach, and it's a completely different story. She transforms into a water nymph, fearlessly diving into the ocean waves, splashing and swimming with pure, unadulterated joy. It's incredible to witness how she can despise one form of aquatic activity but absolutely adore the vastness and freedom of the sea. It speaks volumes about her independent and adventurous spirit. Perhaps the most talked-about aspect of Nala’s personality is her unique way of showing affection. If you're looking for a German Shepherd who will snuggle up on the couch for hours, Nala isn't your girl. She’s not one for traditional cuddles. However, that doesn't mean she's not affectionate. Quite the opposite! She has her own love language. She’ll come over, nudge your hand with her nose, or lean her entire body weight against you, silently demanding pets and scratches. And once you start, there’s no stopping! Her favorite spots for a good scratch are behind her big ears (which earned her the nickname "Big Ears") and along her back. It’s a wonderful example of how dogs, and especially a German Shepherd like Nala, can express love in their own distinct ways. Her "Wiggle Butt" nickname comes from the excited dance she does when greeting us, a clear sign of her deep affection. Even being the runt of her litter, Nala developed a strong will and a confident demeanor. At 10 years old, she carries herself with a quiet dignity, but her playful side is never far beneath the surface. Her intelligence, a hallmark of the German Shepherd breed, means she's always observant, picking up on cues and routines with remarkable speed. She's also incredibly protective, always keeping an eye on her family, true to her German Shepherd nature. Living with Nala means understanding and appreciating her individual quirks. Every day is a reminder of her vibrant personality – from her stick hunts to her ocean escapades, and her unique cuddles. She's not just a pet; she's a cherished family member whose distinct personality makes our lives richer and more entertaining.
