Looking for Your Face

From the beginning of my life

I have been looking for your face

but today I have seen it

Today I have seen

the charm, the beauty,

the unfathomable grace

of the face

that I was looking for

Today I have found you

and those who laughed

and scorned me yesterday

are sorry that they were not looking

as I did

I am bewildered by the magnificence

of your beauty

and wish to see you

with a hundred eyes

My heart has burned with passion

and has searched forever

for this wondrous beauty

that I now behold

I am ashamed

to call this love human

and afraid of God

to call it divine

Your fragrant breath

like the morning breeze

has come to the stillness of the garden

You have breathed new life into me

I have become your sunshine

and also your shadow

My soul is screaming in ecstasy

Every fiber of my being

is in love with you

Your effulgence

has lit a fire in my heart

and you have made radiant

for me

the earth and sky

My arrow of love

has arrived at the target

I am in the house of mercy

and my heart

is a place of prayer

... Read moreRumi's poem "Looking for Your Face" is a profound exploration of love, beauty, and spiritual awakening. As someone who has often turned to poetry to make sense of emotions, I find this piece strikingly relatable and timeless. The poem's vivid descriptions — from the charm and unfathomable grace of the sought-after face to the soul's burning passion — capture the intense longing and fulfillment that love can bring. What resonates deeply with me is the portrayal of love as something beyond the human and divine, evoking both awe and humility. This duality reminds me of moments in my own life when I felt overwhelmed by the power of affection, almost as if it transcended ordinary experience. The metaphor of becoming both sunshine and shadow beautifully illustrates how love changes us, illuminating some parts and casting others into mystery. The poem’s sensory imagery — the fragrant breath like morning breeze, the fire lit within the heart, and the earth and sky made radiant — invites readers to experience love as a living, breathing force. It sparks a reminder that love is not just a feeling but an all-encompassing presence that renews and transforms life itself. Moreover, this poem encourages reflection on the journey toward finding 'your face' — a metaphor for discovering the beloved, or perhaps a deeper part of oneself. It teaches patience and devotion, highlighting that true appreciation and understanding may come only after persistent searching. In my view, sharing works like Rumi's helps us embrace vulnerability and the profound beauty in our emotional and spiritual journeys. Whether you interpret this poem as romantic love, divine love, or self-love, it offers a universal message: that love is a powerful, mysterious force worth seeking and cherishing wholeheartedly.
