The first woman to run the Boston Marathon with an official race number, Kathrine Switzer, famously said “if you're ever losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon." If you’ve ever been a marathon spectator, especially for the NYC Marathon, you know EXACTLY what she means.
…but what I didn’t realize until this week was how running one would effect me. I signed up for the NYC Marathon with no idea what I was getting myself into - the hours and hours of training, learning the importance of recovery the hard way, saying “no” to things I previously wouldn’t have. The training was hard, but my body and mind started to do things I didn’t think they were capable of. I could run double digit miles and it felt like walking, I forgot what depression actually felt like, I became more disciplined in every area of life and my life just all around became BETTER.
When I lost faith in myself, training for the NYC Marathon restored it in every way possible - all before even getting to the start line.
