The Table Cloth

Essentially, it's an orographic cloud – a cloud that forms when moist air from the ocean, driven by the strong south-easterly winds (often called the 'Cape Doctor'), is pushed up the mountain slopes. As the air rises, it cools, and the moisture within it condenses, creating these dense, white clouds. When these clouds reach the summit, they can't always pass over quickly enough, so they spill over the edge, cascading down the front face of the mountain like a gigantic, ethereal tablecloth. It partially obscures its upper slopes, giving the mountain a completely different, almost mystical character. From my personal experience, what makes it so captivating is the dynamic movement. One moment, the rocky and barren upper parts of the mountain are starkly visible, and the next, they're enveloped in this soft, flowing blanket. It truly transforms the landscape entirely. While it can happen throughout the year, it's most common during the summer months (December to February) when those powerful south-easterly winds are at their peak.
