Soul Food Sunday 🫶✨
On Sunday I made:
✨Baked Chicken
✨Candied Yams
✨Mac and Cheese
✨Corn Bread
There's nothing quite like gathering around the dinner table for a Soul Food Sunday feast. For me, it's more than just a meal; it's a tradition, a moment of comfort, and a celebration of family. That's why I absolutely love preparing these dishes, knowing they bring smiles and full bellies to everyone I share them with. It’s about creating those cherished memories around good food. When I plan my Soulfood Sunday, I always start with the classics because they’re what everyone looks forward to. My baked chicken, for instance, isn't complicated. I season it generously with a blend of herbs and spices, a little garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and a touch of salt and pepper, then bake it until the skin is crispy and the meat is tender and juicy. It's simple, but it's always a hit and a staple for any family dinner. The key is not to overcook it, ensuring every bite is moist and flavorful. Then there are the candied yams – oh, how I love them! I peel and slice fresh yams, then simmer them gently in a sweet syrup made with brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and a hint of nutmeg. Allowing them to slowly cook down until they're tender and glossy, almost caramelized, is essential. They add that perfect touch of sweetness to the plate, balancing out the savory dishes beautifully. It’s a dish that definitely screams comfort food. And what's a Soulfood spread without mac and cheese? My version is super creamy, loaded with a blend of sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, and a little Gruyere for extra depth. I make a rich béchamel sauce, mix in the cheeses until perfectly melted, then combine it with elbow macaroni before baking it until it’s bubbly and has a golden, slightly crusty top. It’s undeniably the ultimate comfort food and a non-negotiable for our Sunday dinner table. Finally, no Soulfood meal is complete without cornbread. I prefer mine slightly sweet and incredibly moist. Baking it in a hot cast-iron skillet gives it that perfect crispy edge while keeping the inside tender. It’s fantastic for soaking up any sauces or just enjoying plain with a little butter. These dishes, individually, are delicious, but together, they create a symphony of flavors that truly defines a Soulfood Sunday. It’s an experience I look forward to every week, bringing everyone together for good food and great company.
