Dinner is Served

I personally start by cleaning the chicken, taking off any excess fat, feathers, or any yucky stuff

while i do this i preheat the oven to 400*F

Next i pat dry the chicken to make sure the seasonings stick

Drizzle with whatever oil you want (i use avocado oil)

Season with pepper paprika chili powder onion powder and garlic powder citrus garlic seasoning and cajun seasoning

Then give it a good mix

For the gravy i mix one box of chicken stock with one can of cream of chicken or cream of mushroom

(here you can add more of the seasoning to the gravy if you want to, you can also add water if the sauce is too thick, if you want the sauce to be thicker you can add two cans or one can of each)

pour the sauce into a baking pan the. place the chicken in the pan

bake at 400 for an hour covered basting the sauce on top of the chicken every 20 minutes

Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes

pair with rice potatoes or even pasta. maybe throw in a vegetable and tadaaaaa dinner is served 👯‍♀️🎉

... Read moreI absolutely love a good Sunday dinner, and for me, nothing says 'comfort' and 'home' quite like a classic soul food spread. My smothered chicken recipe is truly at the heart of it all. There’s just something so special about gathering around the table with family and friends, and a dish like this makes those moments even more memorable. When I think of a perfect Sunday meal, this tender chicken, swimming in its incredible gravy, is always the star. It's a dish that warms you from the inside out and brings everyone together. To really elevate your Sunday dinner experience and embrace that rich soul food tradition, think about the accompanying sides. While my recipe mentions serving it with rice or pasta, I often find myself leaning towards classic choices that complement the savory chicken and gravy so beautifully. For instance, creating creamy, buttery mashed potatoes from scratch is, in my opinion, an absolute must! There's nothing quite like spooning that rich gravy over fluffy, homemade mashed potatoes – it's pure bliss, and honestly, a non-negotiable for me. And to add a touch of freshness, color, and a little green to the plate, a simple side of steamed or lightly roasted asparagus, as you might see in my picture, works wonderfully. It offers a nice textural contrast and balances the richness of the main dish without overpowering it. Beyond these, consider other soul food staples to round out your plate and make it a truly authentic experience. Imagine some slow-cooked, tender collard greens, seasoned perfectly with a touch of smoked turkey or a ham hock for that deep, earthy, and slightly savory flavor. Or perhaps a sweet potato casserole, with its warm spices and a delightful pecan or marshmallow topping, adding a wonderful sweet and savory contrast. And of course, no soul food Sunday dinner is truly complete without a batch of freshly baked cornbread – whether it's sweet or savory, it’s absolutely perfect for soaking up every last drop of that amazing gravy! Sometimes, if I'm feeling extra indulgent, I'll even whip up a quick batch of creamy, baked mac and cheese; the cheesy goodness is always a guaranteed hit with everyone. Making a soul food Sunday dinner isn't just about the food itself; it's about the feeling, the tradition, and the love that goes into it. It's about taking the time to prepare a meal with care, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, and sharing good company. Don't be afraid to adjust the seasonings to your personal taste – that's truly the beauty of home cooking! Whether you're a seasoned cook with years of experience or just starting your culinary journey, this smothered chicken recipe, when paired with these classic, comforting sides, will undoubtedly bring that authentic soul food Sunday comfort right to your kitchen. So go ahead, put on some good music, gather your ingredients, and enjoy the process of creating a truly unforgettable meal. It’s more than just dinner; it’s a cherished tradition that feeds the soul.
