When I went through junior year, I faced the same dilemma many rising seniors do: how to stand out in college applications. Initially, I tried juggling multiple extracurriculars (ECs) but quickly realized spreading myself thin meant no real depth or achievement in any one area. Inspired by advice to focus on quality over quantity, I dropped three clubs and committed fully to one impactful EC—the school literary magazine. This pivot wasn’t easy because it required reprioritization and time management. However, it also offered a genuine story for my Common App essay—a reflection of meaningful involvement rather than a checklist of experiences. This deep engagement not only gave me material to write about but showed admission officers my dedication and growth. Balancing SAT prep alongside this EC was another challenge. I followed a focused approach, capping SAT study at about 45 minutes a day using Lumist’s course, which helped avoid burnout. By May of junior year, I felt confident with my SAT scores and dedicated afternoons to the literary magazine instead. This strategy worked well for me because it allowed energy and focus to build intensely on one area, making my application more memorable. For rising juniors, it’s crucial to evaluate your activities and consider dropping some shallow involvements in favor of deeper exploration where you can contribute significantly and develop leadership or unique skills. Ultimately, this approach not only strengthened my college application but also enriched my high school experience with purposeful engagement rather than overwhelming multitasking.
