Hotline Miami Art No. 1 “Carl”

Carl: The farthest thing from meta but an instant favorite if you don't mind the mess. This my original take on the character Carl; originally a grasshopper mask, now a Mantis. I also gave him some extra pockets for some spare drill bits and batteries. #hotlinemiami #hotlinemiami2 #Carl #drawing #fanart #fyp

... Read moreHey everyone! So thrilled you're checking out my take on Carl from Hotline Miami. I know a lot of you are curious about Carl's role and his iconic look in the game, so let's dive a bit deeper into the character and my creative process! Carl, with his original unsettling grasshopper mask, always stood out to me. He's one of those characters that embodies the intense, often disturbing atmosphere of Hotline Miami. While we never really see 'Carl Hotline Miami face,' his mask and actions speak volumes about his personality – a true force in the game's brutal narrative. For my fanart, I really wanted to push that intense vibe further, reimagining his signature mask as a fierce mantis. To me, the mantis felt even more predatory and perfectly fitting for the chaotic, neon-drenched world of Hotline Miami, giving him an even sharper, more menacing edge than the classic grasshopper mask. It was a fun challenge to blend the familiar with something new. When I was drawing this, I focused a lot on his combat readiness and utility. You can see I've given him some serious, heavy-duty tactical wear, complete with extra pockets. I figure he'd need those – perfect for storing spare drill bits and batteries, which I imagine he'd always need close at hand for... well, whatever Carl gets up to in his missions! I even loved incorporating a drill attached to his side, giving it a bit of a grim, dripping liquid effect to really sell that gritty Hotline Miami aesthetic. And of course, no Carl fanart would be complete without a nod to his brutal combat style; he's sporting that distinctive golf club-like weapon over his shoulder, ready for action, just like you'd expect in the game. Creating these details, from the texture of his gear to the gleam on the mantis mask, was incredibly rewarding. My goal was to make it feel like he just stepped out of a cutscene, perhaps from a 'Carl Hotline Miami comic' that explores his backstory. One of the coolest parts for me was adding the 'THIS IS MY RIFLE' text directly onto one of the sketches. It's such an iconic, darkly humorous line that perfectly captures the over-the-top, violent tone of the Hotline Miami universe. Including that little Easter egg felt absolutely essential for fellow fans and those searching for 'This is my rifle Hotline Miami' references! It connects the visual directly to a memorable piece of game dialogue. For those of you who are into creating your own Hotline Miami fanart or even thinking about putting together a 'Hotline Miami Carl cosplay,' my biggest tip is to think about how you can put your own unique spin on the characters while still respecting their core identity. Don't be afraid to experiment with different animal masks or gear modifications, just like I did with the mantis! Whether you're sketching in a spiral-bound notebook, bringing a 'Carl Hotline Miami comic' to life, or using a digital canvas with a 'drawing with Carl app' for precision, the key is to have fun with it and let your creativity run wild! Think about the character's motivations and how that translates into their visual design. What other Hotline Miami characters would you love to see reimagined, and how would you change their masks or gear?
