Among the costumes of the samurai, there are not many things as interesting as the broom. The records of this broom date back to the Kamakura period, and there are various theories about its use. There are various theories, from the aesthetic sense that it swells like a puffer fish when riding a horse and threatens enemies on foot to the defensive strategy of preventing arrow attacks from behind. This costume was revived during the Warring States period, but the bamboo skeleton was added to the silk broom to keep it always in a swollen state. Also, since the broom wore red and black brooms in Nobunaga Oda's army and red and yellow brooms in Hideyoshi Toyotomi's army, it is highly likely that it was also used as a costume for soldiers and troops in the middle of battle. The actual broom does not exist, so only a picture of its appearance at that time remains. Similarly, several experiments were conducted to verify whether arrows could actually be used to stop an attack, and the conclusion was reached that in order to repel some (but not all) arrows, the hood must not be too loose, not too tight, and of course it must be kept at a certain distance. However, the function of the hood is also not entirely clear, as samurai armor was already much better at defense than the hood. Furthermore, protecting the back was generally for those in retreat, which was not preferable among samurai. However, if you defeated a samurai wearing a hood during battle, it was known to wrap the head in the same mantle, in order to increase the value of the loot. The founder of Shinkage-ryu wrote in a 16th century book that the head of a samurai wearing a hood should be treated with great care and respect, and the diary of Yusai Hosokawa from the same period also states that the head of a samurai wearing a hood was a very valuable booty. It is still unknown whether the honor of wearing a hood was really advantageous. It was undoubtedly a sign of achievement as a soldier, but it was undoubtedly noticed from all sides! 😬

箒（ほろ）マントは武士の装束の中でも非常にユニークで、今なお謎が多い存在です。私自身、歴史好きとして何度も資料を読み解きながら、その実態に興味を持ち続けてきました。戦国時代に実際に戦場で使われていたことや、絹と竹の骨組みで作られていた膨らんだ形状には、単なる装飾以上の意味があると感じます。 特に興味深いのは、幌の「膨らんだ状態」を保つことで、敵兵に威圧感を与えたり、背後からの矢撃を防ぐ防御効果を狙った説です。私が訪れた博物館でも、こうした幌の絵画や模造が展示されており、戦国武将ごとに色分けされた幌が集団識別の役割を果たしたであろうと言われていました。 また、幌を着用した武士の頭部が戦利品 として非常に高価であった点も、武士の誇りや名誉と深く結びついていることがわかります。私の見解では、幌は単なる防具ではなく、武士としての功績を示す勲章的な意味合いも強かったのでしょう。 現代では箒の実物は残っていませんが、歴史的文献や美術品を通して、当時の武士たちがどのように箒マントを活用していたのか、その文化的価値と戦場での実用性の両面から理解を深めることができます。私の体験としては、箒マントの研究は、日本の武士道や戦国時代の戦術を知る上で欠かせないテーマだと感じています。興味を持った方は、ぜひ関連書籍や史跡を訪れてみてほしいです。
