Tequila Talk Worm

If you thought there’s a worm… we’re besties now.

2025/7/22 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, besties, let's talk about something that probably shattered your perception of reality, just like it did mine: the infamous tequila worm! For years, like many of you, I grew up with this image of a bottle of tequila, complete with a mysterious creature swimming at the bottom. It was always part of the lore, a dare, a rite of passage. But then, I learned the truth, and honestly? My trust issues flared up, just like that meme says, "What else isn't real? Can carrots not fix my eyesight either?" Let's get straight to it: authentic tequila does NOT have a worm. Period. If you thought otherwise, don't worry, you're not alone! This is one of the biggest misconceptions in the world of spirits. The image from my Tequila Talk moment perfectly captured that feeling of disbelief. Tequila, by definition, is made from 100% blue agave and must be produced in specific regions of Mexico. Adding a worm would actually go against its strict production standards and appellation of origin. So, for all those times you saw a bottle with a worm and assumed it was tequila, you were likely looking at its close cousin: mezcal. Now, about mezcal. This is where our little friend, the ‘worm,’ sometimes makes an appearance. But it’s not really a worm in the traditional sense; it's typically the larva of a moth, most commonly the Hypopta agavis or *Comadia redtenbacheri*, which lives on the agave plant. These larvae are often called gusano de maguey (agave worm). So, why is there a worm in mezcal, but not tequila? It all started as a marketing gimmick in the 1940s and 50s. A mezcal producer named Jacobo Lozano Páramo decided to add a gusano to his bottles. He claimed it enhanced the flavor, and it certainly made his mezcal stand out on the shelf, creating a unique selling point. It became a symbol of authenticity for some, supposedly proving the mezcal was made from agave and even adding a distinct flavor, though many connoisseurs debate this. Today, while you'll still find mezcal bottles with a *gusano*, it's not a universal practice, especially among higher-end, artisanal mezcals. Many premium mezcal producers focus purely on the quality and diverse flavors derived from different agave varieties and traditional production methods, omitting the worm entirely. So, if you're wondering, "Do they still put worms in tequila?" – the answer for tequila is still a resounding no. For mezcal, it's sometimes, but it's more of a novelty or a nod to a marketing tradition rather than a requirement. So, the next time you're enjoying an agave spirit, remember this little tidbit. If it's tequila, there's no worm. If it's mezcal and it has one, it's a *gusano de maguey*, a quirky part of its history and branding. Either way, knowing the truth makes enjoying these incredible Mexican spirits even more fascinating. No wonder I have trust issues, but at least now I know the real story, brought to us by agave!
