Frisbee dog freestyle with our rescue Pitbull Joy!
This is one of our favorite dog sports, freestyle disc dog! It’s essentially dancing with your dog. Joy was rescued from a dog fighting ring bust as a young puppy, and we brought her in. Now she gets to do fun stuff like this!

It's truly incredible how much joy (pun intended!) my rescue Pitbull, Joy, brings into our lives every single day. Seeing her soar through the air as our very own "Flying Meatball" during our freestyle disc dog sessions, it's hard to imagine her past. But that past is a crucial part of who she is, and it makes her present even more meaningful. When we first brought Joy home after her rescue from a dog fighting ring, she was understandably cautious. Building trust with a dog who has experienced such trauma takes immense patience and understanding. We focused on creating a safe, predictable environment where she felt secure. Simple things like consistent routines, gentle handling, and positive reinforcement for every good interaction were key. It wasn't always easy, but every wag of her tail, every tentative lean, and every playful nudge was a victory. For anyone considering adopting a dog with a difficult past, my biggest advice is to be prepared to give them time and unwavering love. They truly are pushing another waggin' to safety, and the reward is immeasurable. Getting into freestyle disc dog wasn't something we initially planned. We just wanted to find an activity that Joy loved and that would help her burn off some energy in a positive way. Pitbulls, despite stereotypes, are incredibly athletic and intelligent dogs who thrive on having a 'job' and a strong bond with their humans. Disc dogging became that perfect outlet for Joy. It's more than just throwing a frisbee; it's a dynamic dance, a partnership where you anticipate each other's moves. It's wonderful mental and physical stimulation for her, and for me, it's pure joy watching her perform incredible catches and tricks. If you're thinking about trying freestyle disc dog with your own pup, here are a few things I've learned: 1. Start with the Right Gear: Not all frisbees are created equal! Look for dog-specific discs that are softer on their mouths and more durable. We tried a few before finding Joy's favorites. 2. Make it Fun, Not Forceful: The goal is to build enthusiasm. Start with short, easy throws. Praise and reward every attempt, even if they don't catch it. We started with simple rolls on the ground to get Joy used to chasing and retrieving. 3. Basic Obedience First: A solid 'come,' 'stay,' and 'drop it' command makes disc dogging much smoother and safer. 4. Consider Your Dog's Health: Before getting into any high-impact sport, a vet check-up is a must. Ensure your dog's joints are healthy and they're fit for the activity. 5. Find a Community: Local disc dog clubs or online groups can offer fantastic advice, support, and even opportunities to learn advanced tricks. We've met so many amazing people through our shared love for the sport. Training Joy in freestyle disc dog has not only strengthened our bond but has also been incredibly therapeutic for her, helping her move past the shadows of her "dog fighting arena" days. It's a testament to the resilience of dogs and the power of love. Joy, our "Flying Meatball," is living proof that every dog deserves a second chance to shine and become the best version of themselves.
