2 tips for Raising Dogs with Kids

2024/10/7 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow parents and pet lovers, let's talk about the beautiful chaos of blending toddlers and dogs under one roof! As a parent myself, I totally get how much joy (and sometimes, a little bit of anxiety!) comes with these interactions. My golden rule, which I learned as a professional trainer and applied daily with my own little one, is about understanding consent with all interactions. It’s not just about teaching our kids to be gentle; it’s about teaching them to ask, 'Can I pet the doggy?' and truly observing the dog’s response. I’ve found that even toddlers can learn to respect a dog's boundaries. A wagging tail doesn't always mean "come closer"; sometimes it's just nervous energy. We need to look for loose body language, a soft gaze, and a willingness to approach. If your dog turns away, yawns, licks their lips, or avoids eye contact, that's their way of saying, "Not right now, please." It's incredibly important to teach kids to respect these subtle hints, and to redirect their attention if the dog isn't keen. This leads directly into my second crucial point: MONITOR ALL INTERACTIONS. Seriously, every single one. Feelings can turn on a dime, for both toddlers and dogs. What starts as a sweet cuddle can quickly escalate if a child pulls an ear or tail, or if the dog gets startled. I always say, never leave a child and a dog unsupervised, no matter how trusted either of them are. Dogs are animals, and kids are unpredictable. Being present means you can step in before an uncomfortable situation becomes a dangerous one. It's about being proactive, not reactive. One thing that has been a game-changer for our family is creating designated "escape zones" for our dog. Just like we need our quiet time, so do our furry friends. This might be a comfy bed in a separate room, a crate, or even a raised platform where your dog can relax without being disturbed. My dog knows he can retreat there when he needs a break from toddler energy, and my child knows that's a 'no-go' zone. This simple setup has prevented so many potential conflicts and allowed my dog to decompress. To further ensure harmonious living, I always have enrichment activities ready for my dog. This could be a puzzle toy, a long-lasting chew, or a sniff mat. When my toddler is particularly boisterous, I can redirect my dog's attention to a positive activity, preventing any frustration from building up. Similarly, having activities ready to redirect my child to is key. If I see my toddler getting too excited around the dog, I might suggest a game with blocks or reading a book in another area. It's all about managing the environment. Finally, if you're serious about safety and understanding, I cannot recommend enough learning about dog body language. The OCR mentions "the book 'DOGGIE LANGUAGE is a must read'," and I wholeheartedly agree! Understanding what your dog is trying to communicate through their posture, tail wags, ear positions, and facial expressions is invaluable. It helps you anticipate their needs and intervene appropriately. Trust me, it’s a skill that will empower you to keep everyone safe and happy. Raising kids and dogs together is a journey, and with these practices, you'll build a stronger, safer, and more loving bond for your whole family.
