This is particularly helpful for growing lambs or lactating ewes who have higher demands. A critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of sheep feeding is water. My sheep always have access to clean, fresh water. Dehydration can quickly lead to health issues, so I check their water troughs multiple times a day, especially in hot weather. What if your sheep isn't eating? This can be alarming! In my experience, a sudden loss of appetite is usually a sign that something isn't right. I'll first observe them closely for other symptoms – lethargy, nasal discharge, or unusual behavior. Sometimes, it might just be stress or a minor digestive upset. I try tempting them with their favorite hay or a small handful of corn. If they still refuse to eat after a few hours, or if other symptoms appear, it’s time to call the vet. Early intervention is key! Finally, remember that feeding isn't a one-size-fits-all. Lambs, pregnant ewes, and rams all have slightly different sheep feed requirements per day. Lambs need nutrient-dense feed for growth, while pregnant ewes need extra energy and protein in their final weeks of gestation. Developing a flexible sheep feeding plan based on your flock's specific needs and the time of year is crucial.
